Subject: Swaping a US license for a canadian one
Im new in canada and wish to swap my us license for a canadian one, however if lets say an old parking ticket pops up in the states will it effect my driving privledge in canada, and is it better to just start fresh from a permit?

Parking ticket should´nt be any problem as long as the dues are paid.

Just keep in mind that depending on your province, you need to show required driving experience to get the full license. Like in ON if you have less than 2 years of US DL then you won´t get G license, instead you´ll get a G-2 meaning some restirctions and more insurance. If your DL doesn´t show the issuing date then you need to have your driving record.

By any mean try to avoid the fresh CDN license. It is a lenghthy, tough and expensive process.

Thanks for your response, but what i am trying to say is, while i swap my u.s. license for the canadian one, and let say a few months have gone by and a parking ticket from the states pops up, will they suspend my license in canada for something in the states?

As told earlier, parking/traffic tickets arern´t any felony crime..so shouldn´t be any problem.

As a matter of fact, when you will submit your US DL in Canada, you´ll be given temporary one immediately and the original Canadian one will be mailed to you. Your US DL will be mailed back to the US by the Canadian authority, I don´t believe that the CDN authority will check your US driving history. I know that they don´t have your US driving record in their data base. If you have any criminal record then the story may be different.

If you have any traffic dues back in the US then better to pay or settle that. That would be far better than start the Canadian DL process from the scratch.

My U.S. license is re-instated and clean, however I have been charged with felonies but never convicted of a felony, i do have a traffic related conviction, im in the province of quebec, i lost my license and they requested a drivers record which is not all that great either. In my scenario what do you think would be my best option start from scratch or swap, and what are the pro´s and con´s of both, thanks again Sam

That depends.

Charged with felonies, but never convicted. Means you are not-convicted. Or still that is not settled? If you are cleared by the court then no worry. Charged is nothing unless you were convicted.

Traffic related conviction doesn´r matter at all for issuing Canadian DL unless have multiple DUI, though obviously will be matter for your insurance.

Still I thik that exchange is better option.

You are elcome Sam.

No same, I even don´t live in Canada, currently I´m back in the US.

I got those ideas just from real life experience of myself, my wife, some friends/relatives who moved to Canada from the US and exchanged their DL.
