Subject: how long to land and spouse question |

I have a couple questions that I´m hoping someone may be able to answer. Some background - I am an American living in the states and planning on submitting my skilled worker application in the fall (when I will have 1 year fulltime experience). I live with my Canadian partner, but we decided the skilled worker status makes the most sense for our situation. Here are my questions:
1. I plan on including that I have a partner with Canadian citizenship on my application to get those points. How does this differ from spousal sponsorship? Do I need to prove our relationship in the same way? Will they question why we just didn´t go the spousal sponsorship route? My partner overstayed his 6 months in the states, so is not here with current legal status, so I don´t really want to bring him into it more than I need to, but I need those 5 points in my application (I have 66 points without this). Does it matter that he doesn´t live in Canada right now?
2. My job here is guaranteed until May, 2009 and we want to move to Canada once my job is finished. I want to start the application process so that we don´t have to wait as long after that to move. However, there is a small chance that we will get a grant extension in the spring that could extend my position for another 1-3 years. How long after your application is approved do you have to actually land? Do you have to go right away? Can you wait a year and still be okay? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help.
