You certainly can sponser them... provided you have accumulated enough wealth to support them till they settle. It might take years before they get approved but you lose only a few bucks by filing application on their behalf.

You can sponsor relatives or family members from abroad if they are:

spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older;
parents and grandparents;
dependent children, including adopted children;
children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt;
brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans; under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship; or
you may also sponsor one relative of any age if you do not have an aunt, uncle or family member from the list above who you could sponsor or who is already a Canadian citizen, Indian or permanent resident.

Canadian friend(Chinese) wanting to sponser her sister (in reply to: want to sponsor my sister and her family)
Hello. I live in the USA. My friend who lives in Toronto would like to bring her sister from Singapore to Toronto to live with her.

She does not know where to begin or what is required. I have offered to help her find out and make it easier for her. She is a Canadian citizen and works in Toronto.

Could you please advise and I will let her know.

Thank you. Jim

Mahnaz - You cannot sponsor them but they can apply under the Federal Skilled Worker program if either of your sister or your brother-in-law qualifies. Visit the CIC website at www.cic.gc.ca.

Mehnaz, You could only sponsor your sister and her family if you were living alone in Canada with no family members residing with you or in Canada as Citizen or PR. Also, you did not have any other family memebrs outside Canada to be eligible to sponsor. However, in your case, you do have a family living with you in Canada thus disqualifying yoou from sponsoring your sister and her family.

As Anonymous has pointed out above, your sister or brother in law might want to apply under FSW category if they qualify.

Good luck!!!

Ian, no because she is not alone in Canada, she has YOU - her husband. But she can explore sponsoring her parent(s) as the principal applicant, with sister listed as dependent of parent(s) if the sister meets the dependency requirements.
