Subject: Applying for US visa at Vancouver US Consulate
  Hi,

I´m here on a Study Permit and have to apply for a US visa to attend some meetings.

For the others here who are on Study Permit too and have applied for a US visa at the Vancouver US Consulate before, do they issue the US visa on the same day or the next? Or send it by courier?

I´m asking because I´m wondering if I should schedule my return flight on the evening of the day following the interview in case I´m asked to return to the consulate.

Thanks.

NO visa at the day of interview anymore unless specifically requested under emergency.

Usually they issue the visa next day, give you both option. You can take it by hand or prefer to mail it by courier. If prefer the mail option then have to provide them a self addressing prepaid envelop (Canada post may be the cheaper option).

I would prefer to stay 1 more day and take it by hand, safest option. I know a case where a PP with visa was lot by Canada post.

By the way, did you get the interview date?

That´s also very tricky. You have to do it online and the date of availability on your prefered location is totally on your luck..

Thanks DC.
Yes, I already have an interview date. I´ll go with your suggestion and stay one more day. I hope the hotel lets me store my luggage with them, even if I have to pay a fee for storage.

It sucks though that my interview has to be during the summer (don´t want to schedule it much later since I´d have less time to stumble upon low plane fares) because hotel rates are double the off-peak rates.

And I so know what you mean by Canada Post (CP) losing mail.

I mailed my study permit renewal docs using Expedited Parcel (std delivery is 2 days) - bought postage using online EST on June 30, dropped in mail box that same evening. CP has lost tracked of it! There´s no entry in the tracking history except "An order has been electronically submitted."

I called CIC on July 10 and since they can´t say if documents have been received or not, the agent advised that I give CP two more days to find my mail and then re-submit docs if there´s no progress.

That´s what I did - also using Expedited Parcel - but this time I brought my mail to a postal outlet (on July 12) so it can be scanned right away. The outlet scan did appear in my tracking history but nothing beyond that. But, it´s still early. There should be a delivery confirmed entry by tomorrow or July 16. If there´s none, then CP really has a problem with losing mails. Either that or its tracking system is completely out of whack.

I think you should consider the mail in option too, officially they say it needs 48 hours meaning 2 days!

BUT practically they issue the next day (just based on exprience) (UNLESS YOU AREN´T THAT UNLUCKY GROUP TO NEED EXTRA CLEARANCE, can take upto even 2 months).

For official processing time you can visit here:

Purolator (Canada post´s courier) is reliable in general. Though exceptions are every where.

In that case I mentioned they lost the PP pack and finally had to reimburse my friend..

Sometimes money is not big thing, just imagine the hassle! Lost your PP + US visa stamped on it!

Who would need extra clearance?
Would that be based on which country you came from?
Is extra clearance associated with "security risk"?

I thought the hardest part would be proving that I have compelling reason to return to Canada.
I got a US visa (J1) before from my home country.
When I applied for a US B2 visa from Canada, I got turned down because the South Asian male immigration officer said that I don´t have sufficient ties to Canada. Being a registered student and having employment (in the university) wasn´t enough. He specifically mentioned that I did not have a child nor properties in Canada.

I thought there´d be less hassle with a Business B1 visa (conference docs + university funding for conference) combined with an employment contract + university registration paper.

Yes, extra times usually needed for the citizens of certian countries, mostly the middle easterns and Pakistanis.

Even not all of them have to pass through that extra security, but there will be a good chance.

yes, B-1 will´ve better chance than the B-2, Good Luck.
