Subject: MARKETING AND SALES
  Dear friends,

I had applied for immigration to canada in 2005 from India and waiting for the completion of the process.I did my M.B.A in marketing and i got 09 years experience in marketing.
I wish to continue in this segment also in Canada.Shall i do some online courses in marketing and that will be accepted by employers in Canada? Pl suggest some courses and colleges or universities?
What is the situation of marketing jobs in Canada? What are the preprations required from my end before landing up there so that i can reach in a good position in a short span of time? I am not looking on any shortcuts, but want to work it out.As i was going through the messages i found intensive preparation is required before landing otherwise i will struggle a lot. Thanks in advance for the guidance.

First of all, you have to look for a local course in Canada. Also find about the professional licensing requiremtns for your intended occupation in the province where you want to start. I can´t tell you more about it as I´m not a marketing or business related guy. Just giving you some generic views.

Local degrees can be from the universities, community colleges....Among the universities; University of Toronto, McGill, U of BC, U of AB, U of Waterloo, Carleton...some prominent ones. Admission is highly competitive, you need to have a good undergrad score + good TOEFL/IELTS score to be eligible for Masters level. I don´t think they need GRE or GMAT like the US schools. Less competitive schools may be Concordia, Ryerson, U of Windsor (relatively easy admission but not that great), U of York (new & getting better & better)..You have to go to their websites and do some research for details.

Other than the conventional universities; good certification/diplomoa courses are available from the community colleges as well. Admission is easy, and surprisingly their job market is wider than the conventional degree holders. I know Senecca college, Humber college..Mohawk College in Toronto Area. You can check their websites for the details.

BIG POINT, don´t go for any course just by the degree name or school name. Like an year long banking certification course ca yield you a good job much easily than a conventional MBA. I knew some Canadian MBA guys working as call center agents or customer service agents. Assess first the job market aganist your choice or study, most important thing is whether they have warranted internship. This last point gave the community colleges more flexibility in the job market. Employers don´t care for the degree a wole lot, they care mostly for the experience.

Good Luck.

marketing jobs don´t require licensing. However, local Canadian experience is going to be critical. Something also to consider... the competition from Canadian born job seekers will be significant. It is a popular occupation and therefore the pay is not what I consider outstanding - unless you are extremely good at what you do and working for a large and successful company.

MBA´s don´t buy you much in Canada. Too many of them floating around to be considered highly valuable.

True.

Unfortunately in USA, Canada marketing, sales..law sectors are pefered by the locals, for the non-native english speakers those sectors are tough to sneak in.

Acounting may be a better option.

This may be one of the reason amny guys pursue for MBA.

marketing is culture sensitive. whether it is the sales side of it, or the visual side. Extremely frustrating for a non-Canadian trying to get their foot in the door and very scary for an employer to take on such an employee.

In the marketing courses I took, you hear the horror stories of working cross culture and making total blunders because of language challenges or ignorance about cultural norms. That said, there are companies out there that specialize in international trade where such skills may be very desireable. It is all about finding that fit.

My guy has a long list of IT skills. He thinks he can build websites for ANYONE because he has marketing training. I love him, but I have seen his websites. In his marketplace I am sure they are excellent. In my marketplace - they are hokey and I could never recommend he do a site for someone unless he had me or someone else assist him to reflect the Canadian esthetic. Costly excercise for an employer.

Marketing and Sales has got to be one of the tougher industries to transition.

Dear Friends,

Thanks for the reply to my query. In january 2006 i had appeared for IELTS(GENERAL) and i scored 7.5 band for listnening,6.5 band for reading,7.0 band for writing and 7.0 for speaking and my overll score is 7.0 band. If i wish to study after landing in Canada should i go for another IELTS or TOEFL?Will the employers accept online courses of canadian colleges or universities?I am planning to do a marketing course which is offered by CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF MARKETING U.K. They have their chapter in Canada also and their qualifications are accepted world wide and is considered to be one among the prime qualification in marketing. Is Canada no a good option for Marketing and Sales guys?If i took PR in Canada Can i go And Work in U.S?Does it possible? What i am planning is that it will take some more time to complete the process. So i thought to do some courses not far away from my basic qualifications as i heard that Canadians will not accept if we change the education stream ie for eg.A hospitality professional going for an accounting job. Is it true?I accept the suggestions of MR.Tariq and i will try to work out on that.Which are the professions high in demand in Canada?
