I wonder what Trudeau would have done if PM now?

I saw an editorial last night that made me change my opinion - not entirely... but a little.

Canadian soldiers are serving in Afghanistan. To many, offering sanctuary while our own citizens are off being shot at is highly disrespectful to those troops. As well, this was not a draft situation. Our deserter changed his mind after voluntarily enlisting.

Both these conditions were not in play during Trudeau and the Vietnam war.

A court martial is not what many would consider life threatening. He did not prove he was at risk to the court.

I understand Iraq is not Afghanistan but I am less upset by this turn of events than I might have been.

Technically according to the UCMJ (uniform code of military justice), any U.S. military deserter is subject to court martial and can be shot. Although not common since WWII, many view this as a threat to personal safety for acting on moral disagreement against an immoral war.

They say that they did not sign up to fight such wars, the morality of which is also the view of most of the world.

Afghanistan is a completely different story, like apples and oranges, as far as history, root causes, strategy, and world consensus on the appropriateness of that action.

Add to this that Canada apparently disagreed and continues to disagree with the questionable nature of this war, that sending these people back is an odd contradiction of its own policies.

They seem to be focusing on his inability to make his case rather than the ethics of his claim.

the next few days should be interesting. Public opinion polls that I am seeing were almost equally split for and against.

I see, didn´t know that. Seems the others are to also have their seperate day in court. So maybe this particular case just didn´t go well for legal technicalities, as you said.
