Subject: Residency Obligation
I am a permentat resident of Canada but I work in USA while my wife who is a Canaian citizen is accompanying me . Regarding the residency obligation, I got my PR as a skilled worker do I still count the days while my wife is staying with me in USA or my PR should come through sponsorship to be eligible for this period.

Regards,
Vinay

Not clear what do you mean by "or my PR should come through sponsorship to be eligible for this period"

As long as you stay outside with your Canadian wife then you can count all days for your PR status. Though can´t count for citizenship. You can´t count for citizenship purpose, but can claim to retain your PR status.

Thanks DC! the link below from CIC says: "You may also count the days spent outside of Canada in the following circumstances as days for which you satisfy the residency obligation: Option 1. Accompanying a Canadian citizen outside Canada"
In my case I got my PR through skilled worker not through sponsorship. Does this option can be applied on me too.

Vinay

read DC´s answer again. he said yes. But those days outside the country will not help you qualify for citizenship.

I hope you are clear Vinay.

In the PR status issue or qualifying for citizenship like issues it doesn´t matter on how you get the PR status, it can be by point system, by sponsorship....Only matter is whether you are a PR or not and could maintain the obligations.

Though many people have a common misconception in your case, they assume that maintaining PR like you (staying out with Canadian spouse) also qualifies them to obtain the citizenship. This is wrong.

Forgot to mention, the difference (as far as I know) between a sponsored PR and an individual PR is; the sponsored PR has some restirctions on claiming social welfare for a certain period time. Other than that no difference.
