If you have done your education in english, you may take the risk of supplying a letter of proficiency. In it, you discuss your education and how it was conducted, your language marks (supply them, if you work in english - explain that. Supply a letter from your boss saying the same.

But, don´t think you are going to get 16 points for language if you do not have endless experience in the language. Don´t even try it.

The only way you can guarantee yourself full marks for language is to prove it through IELTS. If the IO looks at your letter and thinks you are over stating your fluency, and assigns you 8 or 12 points - you have no chance to argue. NONE.

As a sidebar - you want to come to Canada? Language proficiency is the best measurement of your potential success. It matters not how educated or smart you are - if you cannot compose a sentence in proper english or make yourself understood on the phone - forget it. having 8-12 points in IELTS, is not something to cheer about.

It baffles me why people look for shortcuts with the language issue. It is the single biggest barrier to successful settlement.

lovergirl AKA the TROLL

I don´t pretend to be proficient in any language other than english. I would not expect for 1 second to walk in to another country and get equal employment if I cannot do my job in the language of the country that I am in.

If I was in YOUR country, I would expect to be required to learn the language - without assistance. Since you are discussing MY country, a feeble effort is all that I require.

Excellent advice (as always) Sharon , but I would like to add another point of view if I may.

There is a danger in native speakers taking the IELTS. The test is not easy. Many native English speakers struggle to gain maximumm points. This may be to do with unfamiliarity with the test format or the casual way native speakers abuse their own language.

It is a tricky choice , if you have been educated in English then a letter of profiency (if accepted) guarantees you maximum points. However if you decide to sit the test instead the officer looking at your case is bound by those results and you risk doing badly in the test and not gaining the maximum marks.

I know of many people who are in the process of emmigrating to Australia (where you need to sit the test if you want to claim extra points) who have taken several attempts to reach an acceptable level despite being born and educated in the UK

my english is lazy and I know I know for myself that IELTS would be very scary!

If you need 16 points in language to reach your full 67 points, the only way to guarantee it is to sit IELTS. If you only need 12... well, there is more room for risk.
