Subject: Visitior - marriage(in Canada) - inland sponsor
  Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen and my girlfriend is living in South Africa(She is South African citizen). She is planing to visit to Canada(She has no problem in getting visitor´s visa to Canada). Since my parents, our relatives and friends are here, we would like to have our wedding here.

1. Is it OK to have wedding here(since she is on visitor´s visa and she is not canadian PR or citizen) ? Or is there any special visa where she can apply for and we can have our wedding here ???

2. If we get married here, can she live with me so that I can do inland sponsor instead sending her back to South Africa and do sponsor ?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Aravind

yes, yes, and yes. whatever you do, do not let her leave the country once she is in. that is the hardest part.

Do not even think about sponsoring from outside! If you have the chance to sponsor from within Canada, go ahead!!! Otherwise, you will be separated from your wife due to the burocratic machine-monster named CIC.

Good luck!

Hi,
I was in the same siyuation as your wife will be. I entered Canada as a visitor, then my husband (canadian citizen) and I got married in Canada, then he started sponsorship. The main thing is that you have to have a legal status when you apply for immigration. Means you have to start sponsorship application, while your future wife´s visitor visa is still in effect.

Hello::: (in reply to: Visitior - marriage(in Canada) - inland sponsor)
Yes you can sponsor her from within Canada. When she arrives in Canada she has to say she´s coming just to visit the country (don´t mention anything about the marriage).
Once you got married get finished all the paper work before her visitor´s visa expires...Thus in her next visitor´s visa she can say she need an extension cuase she alredy applied for Permanent Residency and her purpose is to remain in Canada with her husband!!!
Good luck!! I applied as common-law and after one year and four months of submitting my application I am still in process. Marriages are a bit faster, there are exceptions though. The positive side of this is that you guys will be together supporting each other during the process and approximately 5 months after the application is submitted the file reaches Approval in Principle(of course if you have met the criteria) and after this she can apply for an open work permit wich takes another month to get...I wish you guys a lot of luck in the forthcoming ordeal you going to get through!!!!! Enjoy your marriage and relax!!!!

Do you mean she will have to leave the country and reenter or can she apply for an extension while the process is on going? I´m currently filling in the forms to be sponsored by my common law g/f but my visitors visa expires in May. Once I leave the country the application becomes void so does that mean I have to stay in the country while the application is processed?

time line (in reply to: Visitior - marriage(in Canada) - inland sponsor)
Can anyone provide me a clear time line on how long it takes for a sposored spouse to get AIP and then immigrant status. I and my husband put our application mid january, 2005. We sent our application to Vegervile where they are currently working on files received up untill 25th oct 2004. My guess is it will take two months for immigration canada to open his file, once they have opened his file in two months how long would it take after that to receive his AIP and eventually immigration.
any help will be greatly appreciated as we waited for almost 3 years on his application as an independant applicant before pulling it in january and putting this new one.
bye
sophia
