Subject: while we all wait
While everyone waits for CIC it is very important to prepare yourself for Canada. I am seeing some postings that prompt me to write this. Everyone is hoping that they can take their job skills and education and move them directly into a Canadian environment. Your biggest obstacle to doing this will be your fluency in english or french if you go to Quebec. An applicant my have enough points to come as an Office Assistant but if you cannot speak english EASILY or write a letter without spelling and grammar mistakes- you will not work in that kind of position. You will likely work in a job that does not require you to read or write and will pay you much less money. Obviously, that is not what you hope and dream for your new life in Canada.

I want to encourage every one of you, take the long waiting time and use it to your advantage. Take some language classes. There are some interesting internet sites that offer ESL (english as a second language)exercises online. Practice-practice-practice so that by the time your PR comes you can be ready for the Canadian job market and the success you hope for.

Excellent suggestions Sharon.
Immigrants, I would like to stress this as well. English language (French respectively) is really important and it will help you a lot when you come here to Canada. Hey, in the worst case even if you don´t come here, you will learn more of this World known language. So take English clases, learn it at home, the easiest thing you can do is WATCH ENGLISH MOVIES. Some people learn better that way, find which is the easiest way for you to learn.

Good luck

I have another suggestion..... (in reply to: while we all wait)
Another suggestion if you apply within Canada is start the process of getting your driver´s licence as many jobs will require this to hire you. I did not know about this, I am currently rushing myself to stud a book and get the learner´s one first.

Is NY State driving license valid in Canada? Can we replace it with Candian one without going through all those tests?

I have to second sharon in that suggestion. I have seen postings here at this forum clearly showing extremly poor english skills (not just basic spelling mistakes).

If you are thinking about moving to a different place (and that´s valid everywhere, not just in Canada), please make an effort to adapt to the culture and learn how to speak and write properly. That´s basic and essential to function and contribute to the society you´re living in.

I laugh at your comment because it is very true. I read my postings and wonder where I learned my english. I think we all agree what we are talking about. Language skills is the key to success in Canada. CIC approval is only the beginning- not the conclusion. I am thankful I am not faced with learning and being fluent in a new language as an adult. It is very hard work. My respect to all who must do it.

Great suggestion. Government also offers FREE ESL classes for new immigrants. Thank I know for Toronto area. Use the opportunity to go to school while you are searching for job. They also offer evening classes so it is actually really great.
Person that asked about driver´s licence from NY, no worries just to ministry and you will get Ontario licence. Only problem it might be is if you do not have your NY licence for at least 3 or 5 yrs.

Sharon,

Can you please answer the questions about NY driver´s license. I have a valid NY license for few years. When I move to Canada will I have to start over, meaning retake the exam and be a rookie?

Thanks,

in BC I do not think you need to be re-tested but I am almost positive you start with a brand new driving record and no benifit of history. check www.icbc.com. it should tell you and the criteria will be similar across Canada.

English language proficiency (in reply to: while we all wait)
I agree with Sharon

When I first came to Canada, I thought that my English was good enough. I soon realised that this was not exactly true. I sometimes, had trouble having a smooth conversation in English. People had trouble understanding some of my pronunciation.

But I digress

One of the ways, of improving your English skill, is to read a lot of English novels. When I was in high school, I had to read four novels a month and give a book review. I had to read Dickens, Hemmingway, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and so on. I was lucky that my English teacher was from England, and he would only speak in English with us, thereby improving our English conversational skills. I guess you might have to find someone with whom you can have a decent English conversation.

From my experience don?t assume that you know enough English. Things can be different when you talking to a speaker whose mother tongue is English. You realise your shortcomings, pretty fast.
