Subject: Holiday leave in Canada
Hi everyone, first time poster, so be gentle!

My wife & I are thinking of migrating to Canada in a few years time - we went there in 2002 & were seriously tempted then; now that we´ve got children on the way, we´re trying to work out what would the best would be for them in the longer term.

My question is this: I´ve heard that the standard paid holiday allowance in Canada is 15 days. Is this correct? Is it normal to supplemented this with unpaid leave?

Thanks

Steve

14 days would be standard with many entry level jobs. However, many union positions or senior level jobs will often have a more generous holiday package. No, it is not normal for people to suppliment but again, it depends on the job, how skilled you are, how important you are to the company etc.

We just moved to Canada last week, and my husband´s job started with 3 weeks paid vacation. Not sure that that´s standard. Good luck with your big decision!

It all depends on the company policy. It can be 2 or 3 weeks acquired in an year. Some companies even have sick leave beyond that.

Some companies may offer 4 weeks in an year after 5 years of working.

Though you can go unpaid also if need more leave.
