Sharon if a person comes to Canada with a valid WP and they are a Carpenter he/she will be able to change employers if another employer obtains a LMO.

Why should someone not be able to charge a fee for trying and obtaining a LMO and a WP?

This by far a better article. http://www.thestar.com/article/488074 or http://www.thestar.com/article/488313

The issue in your story is that no one should be able to charge a fee for assisting anyone regarding employment. What a silly notion!!!! No head hunters allowed in BC for IT positions.

The CIC Manuals In Land Processing IP9 allows anyone to charge a fee to assist anyone with a LMO and a WP. No one needs to ba authorized.

We just got a fax from HRSDC on Thursday giving us 24 hrs to increase the offer of pay for a drywaller/taper from $24.00 to 27.10 for York region.

Twenty four hours to get a new contract signed by two different parties in different countries? We also had to provide some additional company information. Stop everything and get something to them within 24 hrs and you can nopt charge for same?

Another very recent report:

I guess the question is, if it sounds too good to be true... it is. when someone that can´t write english is offering to find people jobs that they can´t find on their own and charges $3,000 for the effort- I would hope people are cautious.

We have had someone lurking about here with questionable qualifications offering hair salon positions that can´t spell. (I know I can´t always spell either but then my advice is free) Unfortunately, those would tend to leap for these sorts of offers are least able to pay the price when they go sideways.

The issue in your article is that in BC no one can charge a placement fee. This is sooooo wrong!

The title of your posting is beware of Shady employment agency. I agree 150% with the title. DC, DC, DC if you would of read what I posted you would have seen I had already posted that Toronto Star article.

If the process of obtaining a LMO with a work permit and a temporary resident visa was easy everyone would do it themselves. I have always written if it sounds to good to be true RUN!!!!!

Who here has not been unemployed at least once and finding a job was difficult. Most employers have no time to go through the LMO process and just want someone else to do the same.

Getting the client to pay something is time consuming.
Proving that you have done this before is time consuming.
Sending out CV´s is time consuming.
Calling employers is time consuming.
Convincing employers to provide sufficient information to apply for a LMO is time consuming.
Obtaining sufficient evidence of experience and all the required documents for the Work Permit application is time consuming.
Applying for a TRV if necessary is time consuming.
Making sure the applicant attends their medical exam with the correct DMP is time consuming.

Time is money!

I know the process is time consuming BECAUSE on this LONG WEEKEND I WAS IN MY OFFICE EXPLAINING THE PROCESS AND GOT PAID NOTHING!

Boo hoo!

I know but when you want something your not really qualified for so bad you pay someone like in the Toronto Star article. By all means beware of shady employment agents.

The person in the Vancouver Newspaper article paid for something that he/she will be able to obtain PR status from within Canada quite easily while living here and earning a better living then they could back home.

Check the processing times for a work permit applications from the Philippines compared to other Visa Posts. How long should an employer wait?

There will always be shady employment agents but should not some of the blame be placed on CIC and HRSDC for allowing ANYONE TO CHARGE A FEE FOR PROCESSING TRV AND WP APPLICATIONS?

Roy,

Sorry, I missed your same article as you posted 2.

I would never ever say that to in the particular case to raise salary within 24 hours you quoted is unjustified and makes no sense. Simply stupid.

This is too stringent. On the other hand there are evidence of gross number of fraudulent cases too. I personally know many such stories, I can´t say how much those reporters of Toronto Star and Vancouver Sun are paid to fabricate the reports.

I never implied in any way shape or form that their stories were fabricated! I´m sure they are true.

The reporters are out to sell newspapers and in no way did they report how easily it would be to find a Carpenter a job in B.C. with the Olympics around the corner. Odds are the Employer would already have a pre-approved LMO so all is needed is an application to Vegreville CPC to amend or change the employer specific work permit.

The others in the GTA were ripped off by some very nice people who will continue to break others laws until put away.

My comments were based on the difference in the stories and what was ommitted in the first story.

All employment agencies normally have a contract with potential employers to take a percentage of the first years annual salary. Some charge the applicant directly.

Regardless be aware that finding one employment is not easy especially when a LMO is required.

Roy,

Honestly I don´t have much ideas about the LMO/Temp worker programs. Though I know a lot of stories of abusing..to me it again looks like the fault of the immigration department.

Anyway, I misunderstood you when you wrote "you pay someone like in the Toronto Star article." Now it is clear that you actually indicated the victims, not the reporters. My apology.

We all should agree that these shady employers are making everyone´s life tougher, not to mention only the victims. They are putting a negative impact on the job market and also making tougher for the genuine ones. Last week someone here was claiming to process FSW for the hair dressers. Many consulatans/lawyers though don´t advertise openly, but privately they assure their clients to arrange employment for extra payments. I´m not indicating anything personal to you, just trying to point that there are both honest and dishonest professionals in the immigration business taking the full advantage of a too relaxed system.

I had the hairdresser post in mind when I put up the article. You made an interesting distinction Roy, the EMPLOYER pays part of the expenses. You are also right, navigating all the forms could be confusing but to ask someone to pay $4,000 as an employee seems very steep on a low wage job.

What about a drywall/taper at $30.00 per hour or a bricklayer at $40.00 plus per hour all the while understanding that in the summer months they normally work 12 or thirteen hours everyday. Well some take Sunday off!!!!!

I was not referring to hairdressers---come on!!!!

$40.00 per hour equals to $480.00 per day. Where would a Filipino make that back home? $480 X 6 days or $2,800.00 PER WEEK.

THAT IS MORE THEN $10,000.00 PER MONTH FOR MAY, JUNE, JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER. Or $50K for five months work. Then count the rest of the seven months at $1,600.00 per week and at 4 weeks per month $6,400.00 X 7 months

no but the article was and so was the guy trying to solicit clients on this forum.

yes, there is a point when paying to have documents prepared is worth it. But you have to admit that for every real job offer out there is probably 3 others that are a scam. the more desperate, the more likely the abuse.
