I am a newly landed immigrant in Toronto, Ontario. I got my SIN and PR cards. Now I may move to Calgary Alberta to check out my options before I finally decide - if I want to settle in Toronto ( where my Friend lives) or Calgary (where my other friend lives). Where do I apply for my health card? Say if I apply in Toronto will it cover me in calgary or vice versa. Another thing I heard that in Toronto I have to be 3 months PR before I apply for health card and in Calgary I can apply immediately? So do I wait in Toronto for 3 months? Or go to Calgary and apply? And what if I get card of one state and I decide to stay in another state? And will I need a apartment lease before I can apply? Please advise

each province has their own medical plan. you will need to establish your residency for health insurance. I would consider some private coverage until you make up your mind. good luck

You applied for Immigration and waited and waited and now your in Toronto but can not decide where you want to live?

Did you not research your options and make an informed decision?

Health coverage is important and Sharon´s advice was right on.

Yeah Alberta has different rules but look at the whole picture. How many people have moved to Alberta in the last two years? How can the Alberta government keep up with medical facilities, Doctors, Nurses, Hospitals etc.

When coverage begins is only part of the picture.

Things that happen fast are not always the best thing.

I would recommend Blue Cross for private insurance. The cost is very reasonable, a fraction of what you would pay for insurance in the US. And, it will cover you in every province.

Essentially what you would apply for is visitors insurance. Even though you are a PR, because you are not eligible for medicare yet, you would be considered a visitor for health insurance purposes. For our family of 3 we paid only about $200 a month for all of us. It covers medical care as well as any necessary prescriptions.

Don´t take your chances not having insurance while you make up your mind.
