Subject: Sharing first landing information / experiences.
  Hi,

I am planning to land at Toronto, in October end or Nov. first week 2008.

Could you please share any information that you might have regarding the following:

1. I understand that PR card processing will automatically start once you land and get through the port of immigration. Is that right?

2. After getting through the port of immigration, Is there any other formalities to be carried out, other than S I N card?

3. What is procedure for S I N card? Where to apply for this and how long does it take?

4. During my stay after first landing (for about 10 days, as I am planning to return back after 10 days) can I use my driving license issued at Kuwait or India?

5. Can I rent a car at the Toronto Airport after landing based on my PR visa?

6. What is required to open a bank account?

7. What is required to get a driving license?

I know the list is very long, but I appreciate any information on any topic listed above or any related information.

Thanks in advance.

YES AND YOU NEED TO PROVDE THE IMMIGRATION OFFICER WITH A VALID CANADIAN ADDRESS TO MAIL YOUR PR CARD.

2. After getting through the port of immigration, Is there any other formalities to be carried out, other than S I N card?
I DON´T THINK SO..JUST SMILE :-)

3. What is procedure for S I N card? Where to apply for this and how long does it take?
GO TO THE CIC WEB SITE AND READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

4. During my stay after first landing (for about 10 days, as I am planning to return back after 10 days) can I use my driving license issued at Kuwait or India?
ISSUE AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER LICENSE BASED ON YOUR VALID INDIAN OR KUWAITI LICENSE.

5. Can I rent a car at the Toronto Airport after landing based on my PR visa?
I GUESS YES IF THEY ACCEPT YOUR INTERNATIONAL LICENSE.

6. What is required to open a bank account?
PHOTO ID, IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS, AN AMOUNT TO DEOPSIT (TAKE TRAVELLER CHECKS).

7. What is required to get a driving license?
GO TO THE WEB SITE OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE DEPARTMENT OF THE PROVINCE YOU ARE LANDING IN. USE GOOGLE.

I know the list is very long, but I appreciate any information on any topic listed above or any related information.

Thanks in advance.

1.Your PR card will begin processing as long as you provide the immigration officer a permanent Canadian address. If you are planning to return home so soon after landing, be prepared for questioning. Not all officers mind if you return to your home country temporarily, but you might be asked to provide solid reasoning why you are not staying (ie: job contract, a home to sell, children in school until the end of the term, etc). You may be asked to apply for the PR card at a later date when you have permanently settled in Canada. Don´t worry if this happens. Provided you make it through the immigration and customs processes when you land, you will be a legal permanent resident, even if you don´t have your card. Card processing takes roughly 4 weeks, I think, and will only be sent to a Canadian address.

2. Not really. You will go through customs after you are finished with immigration. Have your goods to follow lists completed, as you will only be able to bring those items you have listed into the country tax free. Do not forget to include your vehicles.

3. You may apply for your SIN as soon as you land. You will be required to provide your landing papers and a permanent Canadian address. It is a very simple procedure, and you should receive your card within a month. Your SIN allows you to work legally in Canada. Your IO can tell you the closest location.

4. Not sure if these are valid in Canada. Hopefully someone else has experience with these licenses.

5. I would recommend calling car rental companies at the airport to verify what you will need. Your PR visa should not play any role in whether or not you are eligible to rent a car.

6. Most banks will require a permanent Canadian address, local telephone number, SIN number, and other basic information. I´m sure there are exceptions, and maybe someone else here can help. You´ll also need to transfer funds, of course.

7. In the province where I live, we were required to provide our permanent Canadian address, contact information, proof of insurance, and our PR cards. We were also required to hand over our old licenses from the States. The requirements might vary by province.

You are not eligible to apply for medicare until you are permanently settled in Canada. The residency requirements vary by province. In my province the wait is 3 months, but other provinces start right away.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I just landed in Toronto the same as you. I went mentioned to the officer that i will be staying in Toronto with friends for about 2-3 weeks but then need to get to India to spend Christmas with family. He was fine with it and told me to send an address notification when i know what my permanent address will be.

I was still able to apply for my SIN card.

But I was told not to apply for Medicare till i get back.

I am not sure what else i need to be doing while i am here.

can you please advise?
thanks
