IT oppurtunities in Canada? (in reply to: Opening IT Company in Canada)
I´m in similar situation. Having worked in US in IT field for multiple years, now planning to immigrate to Canada (PR). However, not sure if there are good oppurtunities in IT field for professionals in Canada. I have Engineering background from India, and IT experience for 8 years in US.

it all depends on the services you´ll provide. It´ll take time to establish any business in N. America.

If you check my website www.obliquetech.com then you will figure - my primary job is to implement BMC software packages.

I think your company has an excellent chance for success. Canadian companies run the same database, transaction processing, and operating system software as in the U.S., and BMC products supporting those systems could be in demand. But these companies are mostly located in the largest metropolitan areas such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and rapidly growing cities in Alberta. Banks are heavily dependent on database systems requiring high availability and fast recovery, where these products could be especially useful.

I don’t now too much about the Canadian market, but productivity is big these days (and perhaps might get bigger in the current economic condition). From that perspective anything that would help a company become more productive should find a god market. BPM, BPC (or whatever other acronyms you want to use) would certainly help.

I had a very quick look at your methodology page and it looks like you are doing the right things. Are you using Lean or SixSigma? From the marketing point, maybe good to put that in.

So the question I would have is what market sectors are you going after and what size companies? In the UK, we are finding medium size manufacturing companies most receptive to BPM. However, we have also worked with clients in service and medical sectors where BPM has worked well.

Financial sector (as already mentioned above) is a big area for BPM, mainly because of Sarbanes-Oxley, which likely to become more intensive. We tend to stay away from the financial sector due to high liability insurance cost, but if you have a background in that, you should look into it.

Difficult to get bigger companies as clients, bigger consulting firms (BCG, etc) have that market cornered. Smaller companies may not benefit as much. So if you go after a medium size company with a clear proposition, you should be able to get business.

Also, while one of the previous poster has a point with regards to concentrating in major metropolitan areas (as that’s where most of the companies are), I wont necessarily discount rural farm production firms. Especially when it comes to logistics, where operations can be made efficient by using BPM. Production in vineyards can also use BPM. BC, for example, has a lot of vineyards. So in my opinion there should be plenty of opportunities, but like anything, it would take time to get established.

But leave some market to me when I get to Canada…:).

You need a P.Eng designation in order to run your business the way you want.

Check with the province where you are going to settle in and see if you qualifications are valid.

You may need to hire a P.Eng, work under his supervision and then get your membership.

Otherwise, the competition will eat you alive.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Would IT consulting for process management fall under P.Eng?
