Subject: Can a skilled immigrant go on welfare ? urgent !!
I came to Canada as skilled immigrant in dec 2007, I am having hard time to get a job in my PR and advertising area, I did odd jobs for survival but it´s expensive to live and I am in big financial trouble now , currently I am unemployed.

Can someone tell me when a skilled immigrant can go on welfare, I am out of $ 10 K balance, only option for me is to go on welfare or arrange some more personal funds , I am very stressed out , pls help.

Will going on welfare can affect citzenship in future ??

I am not 100% sure but I think its about 3/4yrs after landing. A lot of people find themselves in this situation my advice to you is think about it will you make it in Canada if you feel not then you want to try and move to another area or return home.

Sorry to hear that, I can feel your situation based on my personal experience, anyway, I think you can apply. You are supposed to be on yourself for the 1st six months, so now that bar is over.

This won´t affect your citizenship application.

Contact your local HRDC office immediately, as it takes some time process your application too.

My question is..

If things haven´t work out for you in the last 9 or 10 months. What makes you think that they will in the next 6 months?

You can get social assistance and then what?

You are going to have to change either your job hunting techniques because they aren´t working and that might include to move to a different province or even a different career.

Cheers,

Bill

not only that... they will ask you if you have other resources and you have said to us yes. you will need to exaust your own funds first or lie that you don´t have any which could be very problematic if you are caught lying.

also, you may be very shocked at how much welfare you are entitled to. not enough to live on by any stretch of the imagination.

as Bill has suggested, you may need to change your job expectations, hunting techniques or location where you are looking.

good luck.

There are lots of jobs available in the Atlantic provinces. Perhaps not in your field, but there are good paying jobs available for those who want them. Cost of living out here is low and the culture is very relaxed. As others have suggested, it is preferable to change your expectations rather than rely on welfare.

Check out New Brunswick. The economy out here is booming, but housing and cost of living are still very affordable. Do be mindful of the type of jobs available though--there´s a big demand for skilled labour in energy, for example.

Do your homework; I think that´s key.

Good luck!

If you are the same person that posted this question (http://www.immigration.ca/discussion2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41963),
then you are leaving out a vital portion (you want to go back to school AND be on welfare) that might affect what others have to say about this.

You may want people to know the full story before you solicit their input.
That´s what I think.....

in which case the answer would be no, and a few people here would like to put you on a plane and send you home.
