The Economic Stream of the Nova Scotia Provincial Nomination Program (PNP), which has been suspended for some time while the government reviews the merits of the category, has been refunding immigrants part of the $130,500 in fees that they paid to be fast-tracked into the province. Recent announcements will entitle more people to these refunds.
$100,000 of the fee was an economic contribution that went to the Nova Scotia business where the immigrant would work for at least six months in a middle-management position for a salary of at least $20,000.
Upon its review of the program, the Nova Scotia government decided to refund economic nominees up to $100,000. This was announced in October 2007. At this time, only nominees who had not signed work contracts before October 2007 were eligible for the refund.
The terms of the Residency Refund have recently been amended to include a larger number of Nova Scotia economic nominees.
The refund scheme has been expanded to include those nominees who had already signed employment contracts and started working for their Nova Scotia employer before October 2007. For these people, their refund will be $100,000 less the gross salary and other payments that they and/or their family members received as part of the Nova Scotia PNP Economic Stream.
"I can see that this decision was made by the government based on the criteria of fairness and doing the right thing for the nominees and their families," said one such nominee. "My family and I look forward to living and participating in our Nova Scotia community and to urging other people from our home countries to join us in this beautiful place."
To be eligible for the refund, approved economic nominees must still be living in Nova Scotia after 12 consecutive months and must submit an application for the Expanded Residency Refund before January 5, 2009.
