Subject: I sponsored my wife, now can she collect EI
I sponsored my wife and she landed about 14 months ago. She is now pregnant. Can she collect EI, as her maternity leave? Or will I be held liable for this, under the undertaking I signed?

Thanks.
Dutiful Husband

if she is eligible to collect EI she will get it. If she has not worked sufficient days etc. she will not get anything. EI is not repayable under your undertaking.

Dad with all the diapers EI is there to help cover costs. Don´t forget to apply for the Child Tax Benifit either.

Be happy Dad.

Thanks for the quick answers. Yeah...CCTB... great! $100/month (taxable), but I still can´t find daycare for number 1. Thanks Stephen Harper... are there any other social programs we can underfund!

dutiful - do they have government paid daycare in your home country - or maternity leave after living in the country barely a year?

if you don´t like the system here, you can always go back to where you think it is better.

If the woman has worked long enough to be eligible for maternity leave, then what is the problem? She has already paid some taxes and E.I. Maternity is for a woman to have a baby and raise it for almost a year. She will have to go back to work, any kind of work after, if she wants to support her family. It´s not as if she is collecting pogey in order to avoid working and just sitting on her ass at home all day, right?

Paul, you are responding to a post that is 3 years old.

IF a woman has qualified for EI, she should get it. But that was not the question. Dutiful husband made no mention of how long his wife had worked in Canada. Actually, he was asking about government funded daycare and was complaining he was not getting enough money from the government. I imagine he would also complain (given the chance) that he pays too much taxes... but most people fail to connect the dots about who pays for the child care in the first place. They think the government simply prints money in the back room somewhere and hands it out.
