Hmmm... well let´s see. I was born and raised in Saskatchewan. As was my father... his father... his father´s father... and ... oh, yeah... his father´s father´s father. So that makes my home country... uhm... here.

Now, do I for one second think that my lineage in any way gives me more right to complain about the system, or voice my opinion, than someone who landed yesterday?

Absolutely not.

Our system was largely built on the backs of immigrants. Immigrants who changed Canada one brick at a time. One railway at a time. One hospital at a time. Immigrants who at times embraced Canada for everything it offered (offers) and at the same token challenged her systems to make it better for all Canadians.

I like 62% of my fellow Canadians voted against Mr. Harper in the last election. We did so because we are tired of social programs being widdled away to nothing. Arts programs being slashed. And cash handouts to replace basic services.

Am I proud to live in a country where women get 50 weeks of maternity leave and the government pays for daycare? Absolutely. But I am offended that I receive a $100 check every month from the government (to help me pay for diapers?????) because I have a child, meanwhile we can´t find her daycare because there simply aren´t enough spots. I am offended that people have trouble finding doctors and GP in a country where everyone is entitled to the same basic care. And I am offended Sharon, by the racist innuendo of your comment. "Go back to where you came from"... PUHLEASE!!!!! From your other postings, I know you aren´t an awful person... but that madame, was an AWFUL comment.

We Canadians - all of us - need to start asking ourselves what is it that we embrace about our identity, and seeing whether that matches the governments we are electing, and the programs they are putting forward.

you were complaining about the benefits offered your sponsored wife - after she had been in Canada for 14 months. that is what I read, how I read it, and what I responded to.

Has nothing to do with being racist - has everything to do with arriving in a new country (which I assumed was the case) and being annoyed that it is not good enough when a home country would not even contemplate such assistance.

How about me - no kids, no need for Mat leave or daycare. I get nothing for the taxes I pay. I have never spent more than 36 hours in a hospital - but I pay that too for everyone else. I have paid EI all my life and never claimed it. I pay school taxes for my invisible children. Seem fair to you?

Why should I pay for things I don´t use? Because we are a socialist style society and for that I am thankful. I pay my taxes like a good girl and rarely complain. But when the whining starts that I am not paying enough of your bills (cause I am giving more than taking so do the math) I get a little ticked.

Two things:

1) You are touching on my point exactly. We pay taxes (high taxes), and its being wasted and we´re getting less bang for our buck. This government wants to dismantle them further, and offer cash instead. Ridiculous. THAT is my point.

2) "has everything to do with arriving in a new country and being annoyed that it is not good enough" So, what you´re saying is that newly arrived immigrants should grin and bear it. Don´t speak up. Don´t complain. And don´t try to change things for the better. Ouf! Medicare I should remind you, and much of Canada´s social ways, was born in Saskatchewan. Why? An influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe - where socialist ideas were thriving. They came. They thrived. They asked for more. And today, all of us are better off for it.

I´ll stop my whining. You learn your history. And let´s agree to disagree.

And to all those who are in the process, or have just landed... challenge Canada. Call your MP. Get involved. Volunteer. Embrace Canada for everything it is, and everything you hope it can be.

1)you are entitled to your opinion.
2) if you would research my activity here, you would know I am an advocate of universal health care and I am well aware of its origins. Universal healthcare was introduced by a preacher - Tommy Douglas.
3) as long as you give as well as take

Saskatchewan native or Ukrainian who cares?

Not everything can be perfect and I do agree there is a split in this country for those who are opposed to the last governments altra right Conservative stance. He is pretending to be better, now though.

Canadian´s pay taxes because we all believe that others sometimes need a helping hand. That makes us and binds us Canadian. I have never heard Sharon complain about taxes!

Daycare is in short supply everywhere. Why????? Just try starting a daycare and find out the type of regulations you must comply with. Do you really what some "scum bag" taking care of your child?

Dutiful Husband you sound just like that woman from New Market, ON who was asked not to breastfeed her baby in the public swimming pool. Then that dutiful mother decides to have a demosntration against the staff of the swimming pool
staff.

Dah Babies vomit, they dribble, breast can sometimes shoot out breast milk, but most important what about the junk in the public pool with ten or twenty babies using the pool? What about the cholrine, the urine, etc. etc.

I wash my hands before I eat and the mother thinKs it is perfectly okay to not wash herself before her child eats ESPECIALLY AFTER BEING IN A PUBLIC POOL. Hmmmm

Yes dutiful Dad get involved in politics unlike what it is happening in Ukraine where most SA people came from. Like Sharon and other Canadian´s don´t know their history, get real.

Dutiful Dad if you would have read and researched yourself you would not have been so ignorant in your comments. This site has more then its fair share of whiners and complainers saying Canada is not good enough.

I lived in Ukraine so get involved in politics there and have someone throw a grenade into your rally place. Been there done that.

Wish I hadn´t missed the original posting.

02:14 ET got to get some sleep.

For Sharon, You pay taxes cause LAW makes you pay ( not becuase you are good girl).

Who told you not to get married and have kids..it´s not Govt. fault you are not married..

Most of the people said they do this and that cause they are honest. Of course, there are good and bad people. Reseach shows about 87,5% people pay taxes because the law makes them...Do you really think, if there was no Income tax law..everyone would pay taxes??? Not a million years.

I have been married so we can take that discussion off the table - 17 years to be exact.

complaining was the point of this discussion.

No - actually complaining wasn´t the point of the discussion nor was taxes... nor was breastfeeding mothers (though I appreciate Roy´s post).

I was taking point with your "don´t like it here... go home" attitude. I don´t know if that is really your attitude, but that is what you posted. My point is that we invite immigrants to Canada so they can contribute. Whether Ukrainian, Chinese, Saudi, Pakistani... whatever! We ask them to learn our languages. Pay taxes. To contribute to our economy. To become citizens.

And I believe in return, they have the right to voice complaint about something they don´t like. Maybe I am out of touch with the rest of Canada, but I was pretty sure most people would agree with that. Mistaken. Point taken.

Blah, blah, blah... I should have left it at "Roy and Sharon, thanks for your replies and advice to my original post. That was much appreciated."

Dutiful Dad so are you doing your duty? Does not appear so.

In some countries like Denmark your taken care of from Cradle to the Grave. When I lived there if you are a Union member and get laid off you get 70% of you income for life. I showed how much money I got as a cash out from 15 years of service and the Danish government lady started laughing and then passed it around to others who also started laughing. I had to prove all my income and net worth to the government when I emigrated.

I really take offence to persons posting here that Canada´s system is not fair or good enough. Especially when they just arrived as your original posting implied.

What about the attitude of others? It was your attitude that started your rant and Sharon´s comment which you have tried to twist (don´t like it here go home attitude). Sharon was polite which I might not have been if I saw you with your greedy little hand out!

Everything we do with our five senses we interpret. Sharon did not say LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT! You are now twisting the facts, WHY?

If you indeed have been a Canadian for so long as you imply you should know what your future partner who probably arrived pregnant was entitled to. If you where such a Dutiful Dad as your name implies all this information is readily available at any city hall, local hospital prenatal class etc. etc. but....... you posted here, hmmmmmm I smell a troll.

It sure looks like you where one of those healthy looking males standing at every exit of the 401 with a hand out "GIVE ME MONEY", "GIVE ME MONEY", "GIVE ME MONEY", "GIVE ME MONEY", so I call in question your motives Dutiful Dad.

Stop trying to protray others as bad because too many here can attest to Sharon´s unselfish motives.

Good Day Dutiful Dad-----go take care of your child and new mother if there are any.
