Subject: traveling with expired PR card
I have been a permanent resident for 5 years, and my card runs out in late November. I put in a renewal application in early October, but apparently immigration hasn´t looked at it yet because I cannot retrieve my status online. The renewal time is about 98 days (according to web).

I am going to visit relatives in the US over Christmas and it looks like I won´t have my new PR card by then. Will I have a problem getting back into Canada?

Not if you can prove that you have applied and that you are indeed a resident. Coming through the states is the best way to get back into Canada to fight the residency issue.

Also make sure you take lots of mail and junk mail bank records including provincial health care information to prove that you where indeed residing in Canada.

This is going to be a huge issue in the coming months.

Thank you. Piles of mail are no problem.
To prove that I have applied, is the fee receipt adequate? I don´t have any other communication from immigration.
The problem is that the receipt has no information on it for what it is for - just the date, the total paid and a number.
Should I take my original landing papers, or are they redundant with the expired PR card?

Take everything including the Kitchen sink. Recent Bank statements showing money coming in and out of your bank account, cell phone bills especially and stamped receipt from the bank.

Relax enjoy Christmas and if you get called in call me. I can be scary.

With expired PR card, you can´t board into commercial career (plane, train, or bus). You must have to travel by personal vehicle.

I have plane tickets. Too far to drive. So do I just travel as a foreign visitor? Forget about my status as a permanent resident?
Is there any way to tell Immigration to hurry up with the renewal of my card?

If you travel by plane then you must need a valid PR card. I´m not sure if you are from Canadian visa waived country then what´s the rule.

"Is there any way to tell Immigration to hurry up with the renewal of my card"

YES, if it is not too late. You have to fax
them the copy of your ticket.

expired PR card (in reply to: traveling with expired PR card)
Hello. My PR card expired in sept 08. I travelled to mexico in dec 08 and the immigration officer let me in, I was told by the immigration officer that I was ok as I held a british passport, but said I had to apply to renew my card.

I am now traveling to santiago Chile on business, on 15 Jan. Iexplained this to the officer and he said it should be ok as long as I apply for the renewed card.

I have filled out the PR renewal forms for my new PR card, but I have to wait for the supplimentary form IM 5455 be fore I can send it in.

Should I carry copies of my application, reciept of payment and my original confirmation of landing records which I have. I also have my tax returns 2007 and my medicare card and Social insurance card too. Is this enough, in case I dont get my new card intime for tarvel on 15 jan?

many thx for ney advise you can offer.

Can I travel with an expired PR card to the US if I drve my own car to the US...I recently applied for my citizenship and cannot afford to spend $275.00 to renew my card.

a) I don´t think renewing PR cards is that expensive. It was $50, I think. I sent a fax to CIC with travel details and they expedited the delivery of the new PR card. Citizenship is likely to take more than a year.
b) I think that you can travel with expired PR card in your own car - the problem is only getting onto public transport. For getting back into Canada, I was advised you should take documentation to prove that you have met the residency requirement to retain your PR status (bank statements, utility bills etc). Documentation to prove you have applied for citizenship might also be useful.
