Subject: American citizen born in canada
I am a U.S. citizen (american parents) born in Montreal. I never tried to claim Canadian Citizenship and have lived in the US all my life. I am 42 years old.

Do I still have the opportunity to claim Canadian citizenship based on being born in Montreal? Does having been born in Canada help me at all with getting a work visa/permanent residency, etc?

Although I´m not sure of many specifics, I can definately provide some insight. There are really two different ways of obtaining citizenship aside from naturalization/marriage, and these depend on where in the world we´re discussing.

In Europe for example, citizenship based on lineage is still prevalent. In Germany, ethnic Germans that went to the former USSR/Russia and had families are easily welcomed back and often extended citizenship rights.

Here in North America (Canada/US) as well as Australia, citizenship is granted more often by place of birth because there is no specific "ethnicity" that´s overbearing in these countries. This means that even children born to foreigners (without diplomatic immunity) can be eligible for citizenship.

An extreme example of this was the birth of a Dutch princess during the Second World War. The queen at the time was given asylum in Canada and was forced to give birth in a Canadian hospital. The government went as far to declare the hospital room official territory of the Netherlands to prevent the daughter from getting dual citizenship (at the request of the Dutch monarchy).

Although there may be a time limit for claiming citizenship due to birth, I haven´t heard of anything specifically preventing it. I suggest you contact a Canadian consulate or embassy.
