Subject: Sharon or Roy please pls pls answer...desperate!
  Hi guys,
I am not even sure if this question should be here but here´s my situation. I am going to be travelling during Xmas week to mexico with my family and i just realized my PR card has expired( found out on my way back from the US last week..they did allow me reentry no problem and was never asked about it on my way out). I have an Indian passport. I guess the right thing to do is to send in the old PR card and send an urgent request for a renewal card but thre are no guarantees when I will get it back. The other option is to go from here and get a travel document from the canadian embassy in mexico. I like plan B because atleast I dont have to cancel the trip(non refundable) but my question is when will they check my card...on the way out? so they might deny me boarding the plane? or when i land in mexico and I am denied entry there?
Whatever information/suggestion you can pass on will be much appreciated. I am travelling with my 1 yr old toddler so kind of in a fix. Thanks a ton!!

On your way out there is absolutely no issue of expired PR card. You even can board on plane without any status in Canada. Mexicans also wouldn´t care about your Canadian status.

You can enter Canada with an expired PR card; ONLY if traveling by personal car as commercial careers (plane) won´t accept you wihout a valid PR card.

If you decide to take a one time entry visa from Mexico then book the appoinment

thanks DC...that sounds encouraging and something I have been waiting to hear. When you say: mexicans also wouldnt care about your canadian status- do you have any personal experience or a friend that went through something similar? Would I have to bribe them at the airport (as I hear often) I just want to be as prepared as possible/ And yes, I absolutely plan to get a travel document from the canadian embassy in Mexico the very next day.
Thanks in advance.

No, I don´t have real experience there.

BUT, it is a common trend.

If you have th bribe them, then it would be for something else, for not having expired PR card. Most likely Mexcian immigration wouldn´t even ask for it. I heard for the US visa there are some guides who take money to arrange the interview, some even have websites. Without their elp it is hard to reach at the door of the embassy. Don´t know about Canadian consulate.

When r u flying? If u have at least a month in hand then may take a chance for the new PR card. You just have to send the the copy of your ticket to expedite the process.

If decided to go for the travel docs way then make sure to have sufficient materials in your hand to proof your valid PR status; like pa stubs..home lease....bank statements..utility bills....

What a mess! I am leaving in 2 weeks thats why I am so scared to give up my PR card for renewal. Can I apply for a Mexico visa from the embassy here with an expired PR card? Do they accomodate? Or take the chance? Thanks for replying.

First of all; you do not necessarily need to turn in your old PR card with the application of renewal. You can return the old one when you´ll go to pick up the new card.

I don´t know about Mexican visa rule, at least some years back they didn´t need Visa even with Bangladeshi passport, so with Indian PP most likely you also won´t need to have any Mexican visa to visit. BUT, BE SURE ABOUT THAT BEFORE boarding into the plane.

If you can enter without visa as a Canadian PR then this time you have to cancel your trip or have to get the Mexcian visa, IF they allow you without a visa with Indian PP then no worry.

Devi renewal (in reply to: Sharon or Roy please pls pls answer...desperate!)

Devi,

You better get your PR card renewed before boarding the plane, otherwise, you might be in trouble while coming back to Canada with an expired PR card. Visiting USA is different story altogether. However, I assume, you are going back home India. Now, you might want to call the CIC, Vegervill, AB office and ask for help...

Good luck!!
