Subject: Canada opposition out to take power
Canada´s opposition parties have reached a tentative deal to form a coalition that would replace Prime Minister Stephen Harper´s minority Conservative government less than two months after its reelection, a senior negotiator said on Monday.

Parliament is due to hold a confidence vote on Dec 8 and if the government loses, the opposition parties could get their chance to run the country.

The chaos has knocked down the value of the Canadian dollar and there is potential for more uncertainty.

One option for the government would be to prorogue -- or temporarily shut down -- Parliament to let tempers cool. Ministers say they haven´t decided whether to use this tactic.

Media reports said the new government would have 24 ministers, of whom 18 would be Liberals and six New Democrats. The Liberals have governed Canada longer than any other party while the New Democrats have never been in power federally.

The Liberals and New Democrats have a total of 114 seats in the 308-seat Parliament. The Conservatives have 143.

If the coalition govt takes over, will this have a profound effect on immigration? Will the CG scrap the new immigration rules (38 NOCs) now in place?

immigration will be way down the list of priorities. don´t hold your breath. We could as easily be forced into another election.

There wont be another election if the coalition goes ahead then Constitutional experts say that Jean, who is the representative of Britain´s Queen Elizabeth II and whose position is mostly ceremonial, would likely allow the opposition to form a coalition government since an election was held less than two months ago.

I myself hope the Governor General accepts the 3-party coalition in forming a new government. I´m not a Harper fan at all. And most people did NOT vote Conservative last time, their votes split amongst the opposition. But, without an election, suddenly forming a government from the opposition could seem undemocratic and provoke resentment. Afterall, the people just spoke a month ago. But with Obama to the South, it seems to me it´s time for Canada to follow the lead and get fresh faces with similar thinking.

When you yourself formed the idea of a coalition government and then say the other side is wrong, come on Harper.

The constitution is the constitution and that is the law.

No one would have even joined the left together if you had tried to govern both times as if you have an absolute majority when in fact you have a minority.

Pushing groups around sooner or later will get them to push you back so if you really care then govern with cooperation instead of the iron fist.

sorry but I cannot accept the idea of making a deal to control the country with a political party that only wants to divide the country.

this is not Obamaland - this is south american style politics.

same system as UK, Austrailia, Belguim, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Holland, South Africa, Switzerland, Pakistan, Austria... (interesting Iraq!)

think British Empire and then add some more names.

what makes this so scandalous is that it has never happened in the last 80+ years. Places like Italy, it seems to happen every other week.
