Subject: Documents to prove resident in Canada
  Hi,
I am living in Canada for 2 1/2 years and am looking forward to applying for Citizenship next year. I do not work in Canada as my investments overseas are sufficient for my living expenses. I have numerous businesses overseas (online business) which I run over the internet but they are not based in Canada.
I have 2 active bank accounts, OHIP card, driver´s licence, magazine subscriptions etc.
What other documents will I need to keep in order to prove I stay here?
I live with a Canadian uncle and pay rent for a section of his large house. (the utility bill etc are all on his name)
I just don´t want to come closer to applying and realise that I don´t have sufficient documents.

Well Mike that seems toooooooooo much of a coincidence that no bills are in your name. Why no bills????

Never been sick and to a Doctor nor used your OHIP card I bet hmmmm. No cell phone bills but lots of ATM withdrawals and deposits hmmmm. Done a lot of traveling I bet to make the deals on all of your Internet businesses. No Canadian business registered in Canada so you can prove your outside of Canada working full time for a Canadian business????

Good for you your loaded and its time to renew your PR card.

For them to prove your not physically present in Canada is difficult and for you to prove that you are physically present is also difficult.

If your not here -- your not here but one thing you could do, if your here is visit your Doctor regardless of your medical condition.

I´m too busy to list all the other things that people who have to prove residency can do. I just do not wish to get accused of helping others defeat the system by Internet savvy people.

I don´t think Mike is out of line in this situation. My wife is planing on living in Toronto and renting a room in a friend´s house. Rent payment is informal with no signed contract. Utlities are in the friend´s name, as she´s the owner of the house. Until a job is found, this would be a similar situation.

Along with OHIP and visits to the clinic, I´m thinking credit card charges, local bank transactions, library card activities, local store purchase receipts, and valid driver´s license might be sufficient.

Hi Richard

R U going to Washington soon???????

It is not the issue of a residence I was referring to Richard. It is (three years of residency) that Mike has to prove. Mike said he has no residential bills in his name. When applying to renew a PR card which most are now required to do or Citizenship one has to prove they are PHYSICALLY PRESENT.

They want to see that you have been seeing a Doctor and normally when they question residency they require a statement directly from OHIP.

CIC are not stupid and all deposits or withdrawals are only done by debit card proves little to them. Mike claimed he had two active bank accounts---- it was the word "active" that made me think maybe, just maybe he is not even here.

The other issue is Mike claimed he does not work in Canada but yet he does! So is Mike paying income taxes on his overseas income Richard? Maybe if he is not he should quickly.

I could be totally wrong!!!!

Maybe I should get more sleep in the morning but really it made me think that if I could get away without paying taxes I would try that too and then BANG its too late.

If Mike is so well off he does not need to work in Canada don´t you should pay for assistance like others do for his online businesses.

Just my own opinion.

In my understanding all of the above form of proof of evidences are secondary; meaning you have to provide only if they ask.

When I applied for citizenship I didn´t have to produce anything like OHIP statement..bank statement..lease...utlity bills.

If someone really stays 3 years physically then he/she doesn´t need to worry.

Does one need to stay physically for citizenship? I thought cic website makes reference "absences from Canada may have an impact on your residence. Only a citizenship judge can determine if you meet the residence requirements with fewer than 1,095 days of physical presence."

Does this mean the door is open if you are there less than 1095 days?

"citizenship judge" process is an exception, not the norm. You´ll have to come up with very good explanation in front of the judge. If it is so easy then no one would have to physically stay for 3 years.

Well guys to clear things up- Yes I am here and my kids have seen a pediatrician and I do have a cellphone and magazine subrscriptions in my name.
I DO pay tax overseas (obviously!) cos it´s a legal registered business.
I do not want to renew my PR card just apply for citizenship cos I haven´t left since the day I landed but am intending to go for a few months after i complete my 3 years.
So what else do I need?

Okay here we go again.

Mike your kids have seen a Doctor but you never hmmmm

Your running a business residing in Canada so call Revenue Canada and ask them if you are required to pay taxes!

Now lets say Mike is from Hong Kong and he can enter Hong Kong without having his passport stamped. Or for that matter even showing a passport! Then Mike flies back after being there for two years on a return ticket purchased in Canada just a couple of weeks ago.

The CIC officers are the one that question the applicant then they send it to a Judge and you have to explain your situation in his Chambers.

I just don´t believe this Mike and more and more are being caught daily so maybe you will succeed
and maybe.......................

So why is Mike so concerned on other ways to prove his residency if what he posts is fact?????????????
