Roy it was nice of you to share information of you mall visit in Oshawa. I am with you on the economy as its only the artificially created demand which is waning. Some time back few post sounded so very negative about economy as if people would stop being consumers. Here is an article in Globe and mail about zero inflation http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20081122.STBUYSIDE22/TPStory/TPBusiness/commodity .If prices go down people can afford and again start the chain of activity. So one year down the line things would be very different.Sharon i am the guy who posted about immigrant buying meat from chinese store and grocery from indian stroe and Starbucks jobs.

people are shopping for Christmas but are spending less - Retail stats are bearing this out. we don´t need to wait 3 months for stats Canada to tell us. My constiuents are telling me today - sales are there - dollar value is not.

Friend of mine is a software developer- 2 of 4 contracts have been put on hold. they will be laying off 30% of their staff in January. Development in Vancouver has come to a grinding halt... the minute projects complete, there will be nothing else to start.

the worst has not arrived.

Well Sharon I do agree we do not live in a Vacuum but the panic seems to have slowed greatly in the newest have not province.

The Ontario government fought with the Conservatives for three years stating we were paying more then our fair share of transfer payments and they never coughed up the money.

The Conservatives have been spending like crazy.

It is a buyers market and we even have a car dealership in the GTA stating now is the time to buy a car with the interest rates being as low as ever and how their sales are through the roof.

Ontario is not the centre of the Universe and neither is BC.

Always two sides to every coin.

BC had the same problem with transfer payments in the last downturn. I am not a big fan of transfer payments - period!

I was talking with a friend last night - both of us in a similar boat... secure job, not intending to buy or sell real estate any time soon and the only reason we are being financially timid is because everyone else is. Why? I don´t need to be - for the next 18 months I have a secure job and if we can get through the next 18 months I will still have a job after that unless I do something really stupid.

So, I am going shopping to help keep my local businesses alive.
