Where in Canada are you intending to move to? Movers from the US to Canada can be hard to come by, although it´s easier if you are headed to Toronto or other major areas.

We recently moved from the US (Ohio) to a small community in the maritimes and we had a heck of a time finding a mover willing to get our stuff there. When we finally found a company, they had a hard time finding an actual driver--a common problem, I´m told. There is so much red tape for drivers to go through that there just aren´t many available. Still, as I mentioned, it´s easier if you are on a major route.

We paid over $3500 for the move, including a substantial discount because of a long delay. I guess if I had to do it again, I´d choose UHaul, for the simplicity as well as for the cost savings.

The advice from wannabe is correct. You can save a fair amount of money in doing it yourself from the States. But uHauling your stuff is not a lot of fun, especially from a distance like Texas. You have to have a vehicle that can haul a heavy trailer load over long distances. It´s quite a bit of wear and tear on the car, especially tires and transmission. Safety is a big deal, and in the winter, you have to be especially careful on icy roads. I almost wiped out trying to back-up (reverse), as that´s an art form with a trailer. And all this was only from Illinois to Ontario. I can only imagine from Texas. But if you can stand the effort and take the risks, it might be worth it.

Thanks wannabecanadian and richard for your inputs. I am planning on moving from Dallas to Toronto and was thinking of renting UHAUL truck not trailer. We are two drivers and time is not a issue besides we will be resting for the night but the winter weather is making me think twice and was looking at the option of movers to do this and we would fly in. But this all depends on the final expenses vs safety. I am looking to see if anyone has experinced travelling by Uhaul or by movers to make the final decision.

uHaul truck should be fine, Sunita. Driving a truck on winter roads is still something to think about, especially if you´re not used to it.

As far as crossing the border, make sure the uHaul truck has the proper paperwork allowing it to be taken into Canada. Rental companies don´t always provide that documentation unless you mention your intention to take it to Canada.

There have also been reports here of Canadian border officers refusing to allow rental vehicles into Canada by PRs. This is based on a Canadian law prohibiting Canadian citizens and residents from bringing in U.S. rental vehicles. However, if you explain your situation as a new PR in process of moving (or obviously if you´re landing), they will likely allow you to enter with the vehicle for this purpose.

You can always call the Canada Border Services (CBSA) in advance, as we did, and they´ll be happy to let you know if your plans are ok, as follows:

Others may want to add.
