Subject: Buying a vehicle in the US and driving it to Canad
I wondered if it would be feasible to buy a motor vehicle in the united states and then drive it to Calgary where we hope to move to sometime next year once our PR is granted. Has anyone ever done this? what would be the better vehicle to buy a car or SUV? as I hear it snows a lot in Calgary.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks

I have been thinking the same way..to buy a car from the US and take it to Canada...but I found out that you have to go through some paperwork as shown on the web site below. Therefore, I might just buy a car from Canada (would it be more expensive?).....

As mentioned above, as a new PR you really need to go through the import procedures. PRs and Canadian citizens are actually not allowed to bring in a U.S. registered vehicle, according to Canadian law. If you enter as a U.S. citizen (while also a PR), then yes, you could bring it in, but not legally. If you´re not yet a PR, then no problem entering with your U.S. vehicle as a visitor.

You can buy a car in the US and when you land next year, bring it with you. You must have owned the vehicle for at least one year and will have to prove it. You will need to go through the importation process at landing (not complicated, but it must be followed exactly) and after landing you will have 30 days or so to get it up to Canadian standards. Even new cars will have to have a bit of work done: your odometer must read in kilometers, you must have daytime running lights, and you will need a full inspection.

It is definitely more expensive to buy a car in Canada, although you would save yourself the paperwork and expense of importation. When thinking about what kind of car to buy, keep in mind that gas is 80c - $1.20+++ more a gallon than in the US. SUVs are a thing of the past (thank goodness). Invest instead in a good pair of snow tires.
