Subject: Unemployed & in the USA - Can I sponsor my spouse?
  Hello all,

I am living exclusively out of Canada with my American husband; I´m pregnant and unemployed and haven´t worked since I´ve been here (two years) and have been supported my my husband. He is a full-time school teacher with a master´s degree and has been teachig for 5+ years now.

We want to move to Canada and I need to know::

Can I sponsor him as my spouse?
Can he cosign the immigration documents?
Since we´re married and living in the US, does our combined income count or do I still have to prove somehow that I can support him solely?
I should mention that we have lodging set up already, with my parents in Ontario and we can stay as log as we need to until we are settled and he can find employment. Will this even matter to the immigration officials?

Thanks in advance, Any advice is greatly welcome.

Samantha

Income is not an issue. And assuming that you are a Canadian citizen, yes you can sponsor your husband from abroad. The process may take about a year.

Cheers,

Bill

Yes you will need to mention what your plans are to settle back in Canada. One of the keys to being able to apply outland while the sponsor is not in Canada is the ability to prove how you will resettle here once the visa is approved.

be aware that his teaching credentials will not be recognized in Ontario. He will need to be re-licensed.

criteria to sponsor him while you are both in the US is that you are a Canadian citizen and can show your intention to settle back in Canada. income will not be a barrier.

Thanks for the feedback. It is definitely helpful for keeping my optimism intact.

Sharon, I realize that my husband´s credentials won´t be recognized in Ontario,, We are researching the process right now and will get on it asap once we´re in Canada. He is willing to accept other employment until he finds a teaching postion; His skills are many. Thanks for the heads up on that one..

More questions!

1.I have read that this process will take 6 months since we´re out of the country. Is this true?

2. If my parents are willing to take us in until we get settled, will this satisfy immigration officials as far as proof that we´ll live in Canada? I will have my mom and dad write a letter stating their intentions to have us stay on as long as we need, provide free child care to us while we work etc..

3. Should we prove that we have money saved up to help us settle in? We should have about 14,000-16,000 by the time we move. Will this matter at all to the immigration officers?

4. Is there a specific time frame in which batches of spousal visas are processed, or do they happen case-by-case?

Any other tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

authorization to return to canada (in reply to: Unemployed & in the USA - Can I sponsor my spouse?)
Hi,
I have been told to apply for authorization to return to canada, my application started in Dec. 2007. The cause of my inadmissibility was stated as A49, can anyone explain to me what this means, I am eager to know before submitting my application.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Victor.
