Hi, I landed in Canada not long ago as immigrants. I didn´t know that I needed to submit a "goods to follow" list. When I passed through the customs, the officer perhaps saw I just had a small luggage and then asked if I would bring in more stuff. I said yes because I would go back to my home country soon to take care of some matters and then come back for good. Then he wrote down on my landing paper something like "list not provided" and my passport something like "declare given". I thought OK then when I was going back to my home country I would submit the list to the customs. However, when I was leaving Canada, I was transferring via the US. So what I all did at the Canadian aiport was just passing through the US customs. I didn´t see any Canadian customs officer to submit the "goods to follow" list (perhaps I just missed, I didn´t know). Now I am back in my home country. I will be going back to Canada in the near future using my Maple Leaf card. Should I hand in the list at that time, but it won´t be my fist landing already. And the thing is I actually won´t bring in many things. Just my clothings, a few books and cell phones. That is, then should I even bother to hand in the list? Does it matter? Really thanks for your inputs.

As you now know, your goods to follow list must be submitted to customs when you land. In it, you should have listed every item you plan to bring into Canada, including serial numbers and dollar values of each item. The purpose of this list is so you are able to later bring in your personal possessions without having to pay tax on the items.

I am a little surprised that you didn´t see this information in your landing papers, and that the customs officer didn´t explain to you that you may need to pay tax on your items once they enter Canada. Because you are bringing in so little, you may not have any issues, but do be prepared with a reasonable list in case customs requests one. If you really have only personal clothing, you likely won´t have any problem, but every officer has their own agenda.
