Subject: Canadian-Jamaican Permanent Resident application
I am a Canadian Citizen and I have a fiance that is a Jamaican. She has a 5 year visitor visa and we would like to get married about 8 months from now. I want her to come to Canada on her visitor visa so that we she can meet my family and help in planning the wedding and stay here until her permanent residence status is gained.

Is there any way that she can extend her visit over the initial 6 months so that we will have time to get married and then apply for permanent residence as my spouse? Could she work while we wait for the permanent residency paperwork? What is the difference between applying from Jamaica or from Canada? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a huge difference. Overseas normally takes faster and if you fail to sufficiently prove your relationship you have appeal rights.

In Land if your file gets kicked to the local office it could be three years before a marriage interview is scheduled. Then if your successful the standard letter in the GTA is one to two years for Landing after initial approval.

if she arrives and tells the CBSA officer at the airport she is coming to marry then submit a spousal application she will be put right back on the plane!

Your choice.

If you apply inland, only after she has reached AIP (approval in principle) will she be granted an Open Work Permit where she can work. Until then, she is a visitor and can not work or attend school.

If you apply outland, she can not work in Canada until the decision is made.

While the inland has the advantage of getting a work permit, often the time to AIP inland and the time to completion for outland is the same.

I´d suggest you read CIC´s website.... www.cic.gc.ca

Thanks for the tips! I know that my Father came to Canada from the us and the immigration officer recommended that they he come into the country as a visitor and then get married and come back to the immigration officer. He was able to work shortly thereafter and permanent residence was granted about 6 months later. That was 20 years ago though.
