Subject: Is now a bad time to move?
In light of the bad economy with not many jobs available, do you think it´s a bad time to go to Canada now?

Yes, it´s a bad time. Unless you have something already lined up, or have an especially hot, in-demand skill such as physician, registered nurse, chemical engineer, etc. The Canadian economy has been hit just as badly as the rest of the world, if not worse. Commodities (oil, mining, minerals, etc.), the basis of Canada´s recent economic strength, have taken a beating and are at all time lows.

are you one of those new 38 NOC skills? that will help you get a sense of available work. The more diverse your skills, the more opportunities you have to fit your skills into a job vacancy. The more things you would say yes to the more chances of finding work.

If you are a one track mind kind of professional and refuse to consider doing something other than your training - now is not the time to come.

Canadians are having to think the same way so don´t feel persecuted. Consider carefully the place you would like to land. Eg, Windsor Ontario is NOT a good place to land at the moment. The local established population has been hard hit with layoffs. They will be fighting you for every available job for miles around.

I will politely disagree with Richard on one thing - Canada is fairing a little better than the US. Our goverment is not needing to throw the same sorts of dollars into the economy to keep it afloat and our layoffs are still not as proportionately catastrophic.

Is it bad? not nearly as bad as it is going to get before it gets better.

I have to agree with you. Canada is not nearly as bad as the rest of the world, say the US or Britian for example.
The pound is basically the same value as the Euro!

For the optimists here, I´d generaly like to think that way too. But take a look at the value of the Loonie vs. U.S. and overseas currencies lately, a key indicator. It´s also one thing to think everything´s not so bad as citizen residents with established employment, compared to immigrating cold, knowing no one, some culture shock, and hoping the market will line up for you in this tight economy. I´m not being cynical, just asdding a dose of realism in these difficult times. Ontario, an industrial base province, has been hit as badly as Michigan, just on the other side of the border.

our high dollar in the past year was really the biggest culprit in our current Ontario woes or at least began the downward spiral. Our product simply became too expensive. Endless companies closed. Now the demand is gone for commodities so the hurt extends to the rest of the country too.

Our lower dollar will get things going again as soon as there is someone out there wanting to buy something! Hopefully Mr. Obama will rethink the Buy American component of his stimulus package. It is causing a little bit of ´morning after´ discussion.

I will be absolutely honest... Would I risk quitting my current job, move and hope to find employment in this current economic upheaval - absolutely NOT and I know the system, I have Canadian experience and I have endless transferable skills.

what does that tell you?

OH COME ON GUYS

Richard we are no longer Lumber Jacks or Iron Ore Miners only!

People still need food, Hair cuts and a place to live. The west loves to pounce on the East and say finally Toronto/Ontario is having difficulties but not for long. I live here and I don´t see that happening.

The Auto sector cut back in Ontario but Honda, Toyota and others are grabbing any laid off workers from GM. What about Magna International which is now re - hiring for the future ELECTRIC car with Ford which will be built in Ontario. http://business2press.com/2009/01/11/magna-international-announces-new-ford-electric-car-partnership/

CNN had a group of international leaders in Switzerland and they all said that Canada Banking system is what they are all changing their banking system into and how great Canada´s position is soooooooooo.

Look at the price of Gold it will go up a lot higher, we have GOLD. The US dollar is high because of a love affair with Mr. Chicago but that will not last.

What endless companies closed in Ontario. Caterpillar went south years ago. Seriously people!!!!

It will take years for the US to turn around their energy sector yet Canada sells them not only oil, gas but electricity.

WOW is me who works in IT or an office job. Who cares!

Sharon and Richard would think now is the time to work in a government job with the stability. NOPE

Any time is a scary time to make a move but waiting for the good times will mean you missed the boat. Move to Alberta----the time to do that was four years ago.

Remember your History by the time the Gold Rush started in the Yukon most of the best sites where already staked out.

Work is what you make of it and if all one thinks about is the mighty dollar then you all should seek out employment others do not wish to do.

Chicken De-bone,rs make 56K a year with a potential of an additional 20K of overtime. Yet the companies in Ontario can not find employees.

So for a while some people will switch from Prime Rib to Hamburger but the bust will turn into a boom.

Make your move now if it suits you personally. No one can tell you when the time it perfect for you. Quitting a government job to start my own company was a scary time but it was FISH or CUT BAIT.

Research is the key in any decision but come on Canada is not immune to the problems but from what I see in the Mass Media the States have it far worse then Ontario or Canada.

Roy
The eternal optimist or the one with the common sense to see this problem has an end and it is clearly in sight.

Oh boy, Roy. I can hardly wait to realize my lifelong career ambition, along with 4 years waiting, multiple medical exams, FBI fingerprinting, a few $thousand in application fees....all to become a chicken deboner. It´s sooo exciting just thinking about it.

Of course it depends on your profession and where you are willing to relocate. In the little corner of the country where we live, the economy is actually humming along--better than it has since the days of wooden ship building (no joke). Folks here are enjoying what they consider to be a boom time--note that the perception is quite skewed from the rest of the country, who might consider it scandalously impoverished.

I´m with Richard and Sharon: I wouldn´t leave a good job to take the risk right now. We did just that, right before the bust, and we´ve taken a major hit as a result. Now may not be the time to gamble, but immigration is always such a personal decision, to be made for reasons well beyond the mere economic.
