Subject: dual nationality
Hi guys, i am going to apply for canadian citizenship in few days as i have fulfilled the residency requiremnts. My daughter was born in USA and she is holding American Passport. I was wondering if a US citizen can hold both the nationalities or not if he/she moves to Canada. I do not want her to lose her US citizenship. Secondly, could you plz. guide me with the application process.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

The way I understand it is that Canada recognizes dual citizenship, so you are fine there. The US does not officially recognize dual citizenship and from what I understand, they operate on a "don´t ask don´t tell" way of dealing with it. Because you will still have to pay US income taxes on worldwide income, they will know the scenario, but I don´t think they make a fuss over it as long as you don´t officially tell them. I might be very wrong about this information; it is only my current understanding so please don´t take my word for it.

Hopefully someone here will have more information. Please check with US and Canadian federal websites to obtain the most accurate information. You are wise to do your research.

A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.

Intent can be shown by the person´s statements or conduct. The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause.
