Hi, I have a Boyfriend I have been with for 2 years now, I have been to visit him in Australia once, he flew me down exactly a year ago. We´ve been trying to get him here for a visit, but finically difficulties have affected us up till now. He is coming in a few months for a few weeks.
We eventually want to get him moved over and get him setteled in Canada as a resident, and then citizen after the 3 years. we were thinking the best way was to get him over on the holiday working visa then while he was here on that start a sponsership application. I´ve been reading up on the spousal application and such and now im totally confused as to if we can do it that way or if theres another way we should go about it.
Please help! were desperate for solid information and want to do everything by the book and honestly. we DO want to get married, but not if its the only way to get him in the country. we want to do EVERYTHING RIGHT>

signed,
Desperatly confused!!!

For your boyfriend to remain as a Permanent Resident, he either needs to be sponsored as a spouse or he needs to apply on his own as a Skilled worker.

To apply as a spouse you must either be married or common-law which means you need to live together for a year before you apply.

If he comes on a Holiday working visa, he could live with you for a year and then apply with a spousal application.

Thank you for that information. I had heard though, that because a holiday working visa leaves you with the intention of retuning home at the end, would it not signifigntly raise the risk or out application being rejected? we really really do want to be together.
Secondly as for "Skilled worker", he does not have any secondary education unfortunelty, so he would not really fall under that classificaton would he?
Im just trying to ensure that I have all the proper information that I can get as I can not actually afford to consault a laywer at the moment.
thanks again in advance.

If he applies for a Holiday worker, it is intended that he only remains here for a year. I would recommend taking it one step at a time. Get his working holiday visa. Then near the end of the year, you can apply for an extension and file a spousal PR application once you have satisfied the year of co-habitation for common-law.

hi

im an aussie and they changed the rules to the WHV abour a year ago. the visa is now valid for 2 years and can be renewed an unlimited number of times, as long as the person continues to meeet the eligibility requirements

he can certaily go to canada on the whv. to apply for a sponsorship visa, you will either have to get married or live together for a year or more and be able to prove it...this will get him PR (permanent visa), after which he can apply for citizenship after 3 years i,e, 3 years in canada on a permanent visa. towards citizenship, i think a limited amount of time counts as half time from a temporary visa but you should check the rules on cic.gc.ca

if he happens to have experience working in 1 of the 38 listed occupations by the canadian immigration minister maybe he can apply for a permanent resident visa. these new applications currently have a processing time of 6-12 months in sydney, aus (according to the letter issued by the consulate here)
