Subject: Overseas immigration office cannot be reached
  Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can lend some advise to me because right now, I´m in a spot and don´t know where to go...

I have sponsored my wife from the Dominican Republic and we have been in the process now for over 9 months time ( not counting the months of preparation for the application / finding the right lawyer to represent us) . Since we got started, we have had absolutely no communication from the processing office in Port-Au-Prince.

While as we started the application, we were told 8-10 months on average, so that´s what we´ve been planning our lives by. At 7 months we decided to start our family and my wife is now almost 2 months pregnant. I had assumed that by waiting until we were that far into the process, there would be no problems having my child born in Canada.

I recently learned that my wife´s medicals will expire very soon now and they are good for one year. Now she obviously cannot re-do them due to the pregnancy and if the office does not finalize our application in the next few weeks, she would have to wait until after the birth to re-do them.

Something I cannot and will not accept is to have our child born in that country.

After 4 months of begging and pleading with our MP in Alberta and our immigration lawyer for a status update, we have now been informed that the average processing time is 17-20 months!

I´ve watched and read of other couples in the recent months get the visa approved in 5-7 months on average with no questions asked............ I am a Canadian born citizen and my wife is a very well educated woman with much to offer this country. As well she has plenty of travel history the majority of her life. She´s been able to go the the USA, Asia, etc. since she was young with absolutely no questions. Canada for some reason will not even let her have a visitors visa ( been denied twice now )

I now have another urgent situation at hand here in Canada and am currently separated from her once again. The reason why I am back in Canada right now is to help and support a family member who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has a short period to live. I as well as the family member who has the condition have contacted the embassy in Haiti ( faxes and emails ). Informing them that it is one of his last wishes to meet my wife and to have us by his side during his last days. You would think that a special condition like this may help speed our process up as a priority ( it has been close to a year now and our application is a pretty straight forward one) ??????? Not even an acknowledgement from them either.....

ANYONE ??????? ANY ADVISE????????????

1- if you filed an inland application, your MP is absolutely right 17-20 months regardless of where she comes from. if the files went to Vegreville, 6-7 months is historic wait times for phase 1 of the process - YOUR approval. then it goes on to the embassy of your wife.
2- outland application...the wait seems a little long but here is the track record for phase 2 http://www.cic.gc.ca/English/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp#west Don´t forget you have to add in the time for phase 1 as well. If your lawyer told you 8-10 months he was not reading the same information everyone else does.
3- CIC really does not care if you are pregnant, have dying relatives or otherwise. Everyone waiting for family class sponsorship has a story to tell and there is simply no options to create exceptions. Exceptions put others equally deserving futher back in the line.
4. if you have a sponsorship application in the works you changes for a visitors visa are very small. CIC needs assurances that your wife will return home at the end of her visit. Under the circumstances I am sure CIC believes that to be highly unlikely.

The immigration process is neither personal, kind or caring. Sorry for your frustration but it is what it is.
