Subject: Canada vs. US ... |

I´ve worked many years in tech in the US. Have not had a hard time finding a job here. Heading north. I am wondering what I will need to do DIFFERENTLY, in terms of job search technique, e.g. where to find leads, what to say/not to say on my resume or in interviews. I have worked with Canadians in the US and they all seem very nice, however I am not familiar with culture (the subtle things) in Canada or Canadian companies. What is your experience?

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) which part of the country are you heading to? have you found some canadian tech websites yet?

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) I am leaning towards Ontario...and gathering job site info as well so I would appreciate if you happen to know that and would share.
As for my question earlier...though there is less ´fluff´ in tech job interviews generally speaking, I have heard that people from the States sometimes come across ´aggressive´ or even ´abrasive´???

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) Canada is professional, but less intense than the US -but then again it depends where! Toronto is most like the US. Vancouver is much more relaxed.

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) I spent quite a few hours checking ou the sites and sounds of the Islands off Vancouver... Pretyy impressive. Looks like a vacationer´s paradise. I wonder what kind of colleges there are. I am ceratinly heading to the Islands first. Then, over months or years, crawl along the country to Montreal.... perhaps.

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) you will get to the Island and never want to leave. University of Victoria has a very good reputation. Not big... but good. Victoria is our government town.

(in reply to: Canada vs. US ...) I am glad to say that I am on track for a teaching position at Victoria. The big problem now is interview: I suggested to the Search Committee if we could do it via teleconference. It might work or might not. But it is interesting to have the dialog with the University folks. I haven´t yet seen anyone hired as professor without interview. But if my telecorference idea works out and IF the CIC in Buffalo accelerates processing, I might begin working at Victoria next Fall. Let us see how things work out.
