Subject: driver's license
i was looking at quebec and ontario´s DMV websites...and the info is a bit confusing...if i land in canada without a driver´s license and i want to get one there and if i do everything from the beginning..how long will it take? and what about that 12 months learner´s permit..and the 12 months G1 classe...whats the deal??? will i have to wait more than 2 years to be able to drive on my own??? even though im over 25 years old?
please explain and share ur experiences...i have an expired US license

G1 & G2 driver licenses are basically designed for new teenage drivers.

Why are you planning & researching the long route?

Why not just renew your US State License then convert it when you arrive?

thanx Roy for ur reply...the porblem is i´m no longer in the states, and i should be landing in canada in the coming months, all i can get from the us is a driving record...so i figured why not do the things from the beginning cos even if i get a license from my home country now it won´t help much i guess cos it has to be issued over a year before settling in canada...
i will probably get a license and an international one before settling there,,,but wanna prepare myself for what i have to do to get a license in Canada
so basically if im over 25..i can hust passe the driving test and be fine?

Parallel parking is the G2 test so relax and do your test.

You still need to write the written test and then take the driving test. If you are ´trading´ in your license, then you are not subject to the grading system. However you do need to have a valid license to be able to do this.

I had an expired one and had to do written and driving test for full license.
Make sure you have your record when you go in.
Without it things can get fairly mixed up :)

Expired as in a few years (longggggggggggggggggggggggg story)
Everyone I have spoken with say you need your drivers abstract due to the limited access Canada has to our driving information (my case in point they could not get anything on me and when I phoned the state took them 3 seconds to bring me up). You the have your proof of time for license and insurance(saved me a bundle proving I had been licensed for over 10 years)
I did the written while waiting ( I went in without an abstract based on bad information from a government office) and then driving when abstract came in.

Go in with the expired and your drivers abstract.

Be prepared for both written and driving and you will be good to go.

Doesn´t hurt to go in and get any manuals they have as I did find some things are different/new (this is BC of course )

The driving test was a renewing one so no parking on hills or parallel but was a 45 minute test to satisfy the guy that I was a competent driver. Another reason to review the manual (to lose all the bad habits you have acquired since you got your first license).

JamesM thanx for the reply
so u´re saying i should go in with the expired US license and the driving record and i should be fine?
did they make u take any driving lessons because ur license was expired? how long did u have to wait to take the driving test after u passed the written one?

No lessons needed.

I had to wait until I got my abstract sent up...

If i had had that I probably wouldnt have had to do the written test. It was a pita and due to bad advice I had to end up dealing with the icbc regional manager (imagine a 40 year old with over 20 years experience with a red L )

:)

I would go in with the expired and the abstract.

Worst case you have to do a driving if expired over 3 years ( i think ) and a written

best case you do a written and off you go.

Of course you can phone them up but from my experience here in BC I spoke with 5 people and got 5 different answers..
