Subject: Teaching Jobs in Canada
  Hi Folks,

There is the general impression that it is really difficult for landed immigrants to get a job. Has anybody got an idea of the situation for teaching jobs? What kind of re-training is required for professional teachers. Is it really true that the job market for teachers is really choked?

Depending on what kind of teaching (in reply to: Teaching Jobs in Canada)
What kind of teaching? It is quite hard for teachers of English language, but for teachers in other fields may not be as hard.

Thanks Shilla,

Well I am particularly interested in SCIENCES and possibly Economics at the High school level. Of course it would be pretty difficult for an immigrant to get a teching position in English language.

each province has its own professional college. In BC there is declining enrollment so teaching positions are tough - but like the other poster said...specialties have a big impact. You will likely have to take some courses to satisfy the college. If you are prepared to live outside the big 2 cities your chances drastically improve.

Teacher Certification (in reply to: Teaching Jobs in Canada)
To teach in any public/private elementary or high school you must have a teaching certificate. If you have a foreign license you must apply to the provincial body that grants the teaching certificate. In BC it is the BC College of Teachers, in Alberta it is Alberta Education and in Ontario it is the Ontario College of Teachers. Many foreign teachers find they must go back to university and complete at least 1 year of teacher training. My husband has a master´s degree in engineering and cannot teach high school math without enrolling in a teacher training program.
