Subject: Sponsorship Questions
I´ll try and make this as easy to follow as possible :)
I´m a Canadian citizen and my common-law boyfriend is an Australian, here on a 2 year working holiday Visa.
We´ve known each other for over 10 years, and the working holiday was the easiest, fastest way to get him here.

I became pregnant last year, but sadly lost the baby 6 months into the pregnancy. After going through all that together, we´ve begun taking the steps to start the Common-Law class immigration process.

I´m curious if anyone could tell me some reasons why a) someone wouldn´t be accepted as a sponsor and b) why would someone´s permanent residence application be denied?

Neither of us have a criminal history, we´re a legitimate couple (I even have e mails, phone records dating back to 2003 between us) however I do still owe some taxes. Would this affect my ability to sponsor?

He has had the same job the entire time he´s been in Canada too, if that makes a difference.

I´m really paranoid about this whole thing, because after the loss of my daughter I don´t think I could bear to lose him too.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I am sorry about your daughter.
Clear your taxes before any step. You will have to prove good financial position. As he had a job, so it shoulds not effect but taxes should be cleared.

Good luck,

Sponsorship questions (in reply to: Sponsorship Questions)
From the info you provided, you should be able to sponsor him from within Canada. You do not need to meet financial eligibility as you are a "spouse" equivalent but you MUST NOT be on Social Assistance or an undischarged bankrupt. If you are either, you are not eligible to sponsor anyone. The only risk of doing an in-Canada spousal type sponsorship, if you are not successful, there is no appeal (other than the expensive Federal Court route). And you are responsible for your partner´s livlihood - if he has no employment or healthcare coverage. In-Canada type application can take about 8-months to get a conditional approval so it´s up to you and partner to keep renewing his work permit (if he has one) and medical coverage (if he has it) until the conditional approval comes through. When he receives his conditional approval, he can start applying for a SIN Card and healthcare (if he doesn´t have it and an open work permit). You want the process to go faster, prepare the best application, better to include "too much" info than not enough because every piece of letter CIC sends you means a 2 to 3 months delay in processing time ... Spousal / common-law application: evidence of relationship is essential ... joint bank account; photos, friends who know the two of you and are willing to attest ... every little bit to build a good case. All the best.
