Subject: Sponsership Question
My fiance is from Canada (I am from the US) and she is going to sponser me for PR. I am currently in Canada with her and we will be getting married in April. I was going to go ahead and submit all of the documents under conjugal relationship, but would it just be easier to wait until after we are married and apply as a spouse? My six month visitor visa will run out before then, but I am applying for a work visa in the meantime (I had another one about a year ago, so hopefully I can get another with the same company!).
My next question is, regardless of how I apply (spouse or conjugal) do I have to wait until after my file is created before I apply for my Police Certificate from the FBI? It sounds like it takes a while (not to mention getting the fingerprint card mailed here!) and I´d like to go ahead and get that and the medical exam taken care of.

This site is very informative and thanks for everyone´s help!

Matt,

This is a very tricky situation. Some people in this forum advise apply and send the police certificates after the sponsorship application has been submitted. The reason for this strategy is that by the time CIC "opens" your file, your police certificates will be expired and then you have to request them again, which costs more money and time...

In my case, police certificates from all the countries I have lived were submitted with the original application. However, 8 months later they ask for the certificates from England again (either they lost the certificates or the certificates expired)... Unfortunately, I did not make a copy of any of my police certificates for myself. Then, I had to spend about $100 to get those things again... plus 2 moths delay... Follow Sharon´s advise: MAKE A COPY OF EVERYTHING!

It takes about 1.5-2 months to obatin the FBI certificates. They are not too bad...

Good luck!

In terms of when to apply, I would suggest that get married first and then apply. As long as you have your marriage certificate, there should be no problems. Take the Medical Exam right before you apply it.
According to their new rules, you have to wait 21 weeks to get your marriage certificate after you apply for it. What we did was to show the marriage certificate office the PR application Check-list, where requires the original marriage certificate, which is considered as an urgency. Pay extra dollars and you can get it within 7 days.
Remember, you have to argue with them, they won´t accept it easily. :)))))))
If you can not get a work permit to extend your Visa, you should get married. I have extended my Visa two times already since last April. Last time they gave 1 year extension.

Good Luck!!

Dont get married in Ontario if you can avoid it. The wait for a marriage certificate in Ontario is at least 6 months. Expediting can take as much as 2 months. Most of the delay is waiting to get the marriage registered.

Get married anywhere but Ontario if at all possible.
