Subject: PR Card expires while Citezenship is processing

My situation is that I have applied for Citizenship in March, it is now Early May and my PR card expires on June 1st with no response from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. I am fully expected to not be able to travel to the USA (where all of my inlaws live) until my citizenship is approved. Am I wrong in thinking this? Is there a way that I can get back into Canada while my citizenship processes?
