Roy, are your work permit opportunities drying up?

Very few large development/construction projects are going into the Planning hopper in Vancouver. That translates into jobs 12-18 months from now as the projects might have come online. Available credit is still a huge problem.

Flarety is projecting the manufacturing sector ultimately shrink by 3% once things recover. I would think it is currently retracted farther than that.

We always recover from stuff like this but it will be a different economy when it does. I often think about what happened to the blacksmith when Henry Ford produced his first car. He needed a new career - the old one wasn´t coming back. There are lots of blacksmith jobs out there that will not survive this economic evolution. Resisting or protesting is a futile exercise. Our energy is much better spent trying to anticipate what the new economy might look like and figure out how we can fit in.

I am absolutely blessed. For the first time in my working career, my job is secure and not economy dependent. I am also getting to watch how people cope with this significant slow down. Some say the sky is falling but make no effort to mitigate the damage, others are oblivious and will wake up one morning and discover they are out of business. Then there are some that see the train coming and are doing their best to make sure they don´t get run over... and then there are a few (I can count them on 1 hand out of 400) that are looking at this economic environment and are rubbing their hands together in glee. They want to capture additional market share, they want to renovate their businesses, they want to become more efficient so that the minute things turn around they are the only ones left standing and can emerge leaner, meaner, stronger and more profitable.

How does this relate to immigration... well it does and it doesn´t. From my perspective, the federal government is about a year behind the realities in terms of planning and reaction. The NOC list is out of date already. The quotas are too high to insure everyone landing in the next 12 months can find a job.

This situation won´t last forever but for the time being... I would suggest it is tough out there for everyone.

What a beautiful piece they were- both this episode and the previous one. Nothing can be nearer to the truth. It is becoming increasingly apparent (to those with discerning minds) that the panacea to the current economic downturn is perseverance and the ability for a company to adapt to rapidly changing situations and economic realities. The best surely won´t come out of us if we don´t face challenges. The onus is thus on the individual to see these challenges as stepping stones and not stumbling blocks.

And how does this relate to immigration? Well, let those who want to move move, but let them realise that their destiny is in their hands. They can still realise their potentials but must understand that the only constant thing in life is "change".

And we dare say a la Obama: YES, THEY CAN!

Charlo, you are absolutely right. I have been thinking about this all day. Those 5 businesses that are rubbing their hands together were around the last recession and the recession before that. Sure they take a hit but they come back stronger. For every business that fails, someone will eventually step into that spot with a wonderful idea or product to manufacture or sell. If we don´t need steel, we will need something else.

´Change or die´ is my favourite phrase in the retail world.

Resourceful, hard working, imaginitive people always survive - somehow.

here is a new Canadian success story.

Had a handsome young man in my office on Wednesday and he was showing me this newfangle screen that may very well revolutionize the world of outdoor information kiosks. It appears to be one giant i-phone from my perspective anyway.

He has just partnered with one of the largest telecommunications companies in the country and is now finding applications for his technology. He wow´d us with what this gizmo can do.

While everyone is talking, I am doing my typical immigration junkie routine which is to make an attempt to place the accent and to see how long they have been in the country. (forum research!) I have never had anyone question why I am asking, (probably because I am honest about my curiousity and I am anything but racist).

When I got a chance to ask him I got an absolutely giant, proud smile - I have been here 5 years with my family from Iran.

I don´t know who was more pleased with his answer - him or me!

Visa Officers can be cruel and clients can be silly.

We have one client sitting in Guyana awaiting a Work Permit interview for nine months. He was asked do you want an interview in Georgetown Guyana or are you willing to travel to Port of Spain, Trinidad for your interview? He said no I prefer to stay in my poor country instead of traveling to Port of Spain so I can get my work permit and start making $28.00 as a Carpenter.

Now the employer is furious at me because HRSDC will not approve any more workers until this guy gets approved or denied.

Client´s relative calls twice a week complaining.

Certain companies and municipalities became frugal four months ago and only now is it showing up in the bottom line of construction companies. Trickle down effect. There is an awful lot of biding now on future projects but it will take another three or four months for these companies to see the cheques from thos future projects.
