Subject: Driving to Canada with own car---landed already
  Dear all,
We live in the US now and plan to move to Canada soon. We landed some months ago and have not imported our car and aren´t ready to do so now. We want to go for some interviews next week and would like to know if we have to rent a car into Canada or can drive our car and tell them we are not ready to import the car yet.
Please advise, thanks

Others may want to comment, but here´s my experience.

By law as a Canadian resident, you´re not allowed to bring a U.S. registered car into Canada. This is true of your car or a rental car. In addition, you´re supposed to import your U.S. car as soon as possible and practical.

However, if you plead your case at border that you´re still in the process of settling and relocating, they may let you enter with these vehicles, and let you defer importing your car until later. Ideally, you would rent a car in Canada rather than in the U.S. to drive over.

Richard is correct. However, in our experience, we never had a problem crossing the border in our US-registered car after receiving Canadian PR. We simply explained--truthfully--that we were in the process of looking for employment before relocating.

Absolutely register your car in Canada as soon as it makes sense, but as long as you are honest about your situation at the border, I wouldn´t worry about it.
