Bike Paths run along the various branches of the Don River all over Toronto. You can be biking along for quite some time and never ever see a car.

When you do decide to come on up Richard join the Toronto Bicycling Network. Most of my H&C clients join that club.

You can ride from one major park in Toronto to another to another and rarely have a car on your path.

According to Sharon you were considering an area of the GTA next to the Lake where Carabana takes place every Civic Holiday Weekend. You could ride there for ten plus miles enjoying the Sail Boats on the Lake and end up at Harborfront for a brew with Bill.

I live east of Toronto and the same applies there. Any place where this a little creek there is a bike path plus lots of connecting ones too. I actually enjoy biking which I do from March to November.

Thanks for the info., Roy. Sounds like that club would be similar to the Chicagoland Bicycling Federation, where they organize rides, push for cycling zones and lanes, provide maps, bike discounts, etc.

Yes, I think GTA does have a good bike system. I´m not sure if extends to the outer reaches such as Guelph, Oshawa (your neck or the woods) and the like, as I get the impression it´s strictly a city system. Here, the main and most popular city route is along the lakefront for about 18 miles. One does have to compete with inline skaters, joggers, walkers, etc., but the entire city lakefront is dedicated parks, beaches, and paths, making it car and industry free. In the far suburbs (where I´m at) there are additional path networks that then continue into rural areas and outlying towns. That´s what I´m wondering if GTA has.

Next time I´m up in GTA, I´ll check out Harborfront, as it sounds very similar to Belmont Harbor here.

Richard we were invited guest of Chicago in 2001 and docked at the Navy Pier and if that is what your talking about with the shops and stuff there like fast food restaurants.

Harborfront is more family orientated and a I think nicer. You can take ships out for a trip around the Toronto Harbour or over to Centre Island etc.

Yep, Toronto is very bicycle friendly, with more dedicated city paths than Chicago. We´re probably better at extended them out into the countryside, though. But it amazes me how similar Toronto is to Chicago in many ways (as a smaller version) - diversity, ethnic neighborhoods, lakefront, sailboating, etc.

From a recent visit, walking along the city´s shoreline, it seems to me we have a more developed lakefront park system that extends throughout the city, with paths running continuously along the lake. I didn´t see that there. The water there seemed a bit questionable at the beaches, as I didn´t see a lot of bathers or swimmers, and looked a bit murky.

Hey! I like the idea about the brew that Roy mentioned.
There are nice bike paths in Kelowna as well.

Cheers,

Bill

In Kelowna in the mountains? Bike paths there? Well, I´ll have to check that out. Altho I can´t imagine those uphill climbs followed by 40mph downspeed coasts. Gotta have a triple with the "granny" lower gears for that terrain.
