Hi,

Is it true that the applicant should be okay if showing proof of fund at least for the first year tution + living expenses ?

This is true for US visa but for Canada you have to convince the visa officer that you´ll be able to meet the expenses for the entire duration. Show the money for first year and source of funds for the remaining period.
