Subject: Sponsorship of Spouse
  Hello,
I´m a Canadian Citizen and my husband is in Sweden. I am sponsoring him to come to Canada. His application arrived in London in January 2009. He had an interview in March and now it is almost July and we have heard nothing. They say that they are doing background checks. Does anyone know on average how long these background checks take? As well, does anyone know how long on average it takes to sponsor your spouse, who is in Sweden, to come to Canada? It has been 6 months since London started the process and it still is in process. How long do we have to wait??? :(

Your partner is in Sweden so I assume he has a EU or Swedish passport.

That means he is far closer to you unless your in BC then most other spouses based on where most Canadian´s live.

As long as he does not bring his pots and pans and all his pets have him come for a visit. Once he gets his COPR he can go to the States and return to get his Landing status.

Remember he will only becoming for a visit! "WINK"

Well, actually he does not have a Swedish passport or an EU one. The thing is, also, they say that when the status of the application is in process, the person being sponsored should not do anything but wait until they receive their visa. I´ve heard some people say that this application (sponsoring your spouse who lives in Sweden to come to Canada) should take no longer than 6 months, whereas others have said that it takes over 20 months. I just don´t understand why it would take 20 months, especially when my husband already had his interview and their doing background checks on him. How come some cases finish fast, like in 2 months and some take so long and their being processed in the same processing centre such as the processing centre in London, England?

I believe some applications take longer than others because of the delays experienced in getting security reports from certain countries. If your husband hasn´t got an EU passport, then it might mean his application might not progress as fast as expected.
