Options for Sponsoring Family Members to Canada
Pamela Busch, Certified Canadian Immigration Consultant

Do you know that there are several options open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members to join them in Canada?

Federal Sponsorship Program – As a sponsor you are able to sponsor family members including a spouse and dependent children, parents, grandparents, brother/sisters or nephews/nieces or grandsons/granddaughters who are orphaned and under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship. You can also sponsor the accompanying relatives of the above. Under limited circumstances you can sponsor relatives of any age or relationship. You are not able to sponsor your brother/sister if they are over 18 or adult independent children.

A sponsor and the family members they are sponsoring are required to sign a sponsorship agreement. The sponsor is required to commit to supporting their family members financially for a period of three to ten years. The exact amount of financial support is determined by how many family members are being sponsored and the duration of this obligation is determined based on the family member’s age and relationship to the sponsor.

This process begins when a sponsor submits their application to a Case Processing Center in Canada. If the sponsor’s application is approved, the family members submit their completed applications to the Canadian Embassy/High Commission abroad. The Canadian Embassy/High Commission will review the documents and provide instructions for a medical examination and a criminal background check to be completed. Once the Canadian Embassy/High Commission has completed their review and the family members have successfully passed their medical examinations and criminal background checks their permanent residency visas are issued.

Alberta Family Stream Program - Family members eligible for sponsorship include a parent, child, brother/sister, aunt/uncle or niece/nephew. Under this program you cannot sponsor your spouse’s family members. The sponsor must also provide documentation evidencing their citizenship/permanent residency status and show that they have lived in Alberta for two years and their income during this time. The candidate and spouse must be between the ages of 21 and 45 at the time an application is filed. They must also provide evidence of an English language assessment, their educational training and work experience. The candidate, their spouse or their sponsor must also provide evidence that there are funds available in a Canadian bank to help support those being sponsored. The amount of financial support needed is based on the number of dependants the candidate has.

The sponsor and the candidate must submit application forms and supporting documents to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) for processing. After an application is approved at the AINP office, family members submit their permanent residency applications, processing fee payments and supporting documents to a Canadian Embassy/High Commission outside of Canada. Once the Canadian Embassy/High Commission has completed their review and your family members have successfully passed their medicals and criminal background checks their permanent residency visas are issued.

So Ron do you work for Pamela?

What about the two years Mississauga CPC takes to approve the son or daughter who is sponsoring their parent´s when all they got to prove is that they are a Permanent Resident residing in Canada or a Canadian citizen who meets the Low Income Cutoff LICO? Two years!!!

Supposedly man walked on the moon 40 years ago, today. Almost anything is possible and this article is cut and pasted right from CIC web site.

Anyone promoting their business and does not inform the client it will be five years minimum to sponsor a Parent as a Federal Parental Sponsorhip could be misleading the public. When it sounds too good........

So who is Pamela and what is her experience? Oh I forgot I would trust everyone with a last name of BUSCH!!!! WMD.
