  Want summer? Try B.C.
RICHARD LAM FOR THE TORONTO STAR

Sun worshippers sprawl out on Vancouver´s Kitsilano Beach and enjoy the third straight day of temperatures hovering near 30C on July 29, 2009.

VANCOUVER–Here is the tale of three Summers across the country from B.C. to Ontario to Newfoundland.

Aaron Summer, of Burnaby, B.C., is melting in a record-breaking heat wave. In Stoney Creek, Ont., rain is once again spitting on Warren Summer, and Rosemary Summers, of Newfoundland, is basking in the sun for now but knows it won´t last.

For anyone wondering where summer went, these three Summers know.

"It´s all on that side of the country," said Warren Summer, who´s been getting ribbed by friends about the lack of warm weather this year.

"You can keep it. I don´t want it that hot. But a little good weather would be nice."

Last week, Warren got fall weather when he went out on a boat and encountered only rain and cool temperatures.

Meteorologist Gary Dickinson with Environment Canada said Vancouver is getting a Toronto-like heat wave with the humidity. The temperature yesterday reached nearly 34C, breaking the record of 33C set in 1960.

"The big difference with this heat wave is it´s much more humid and that´s normally what Toronto gets but we´re seeing it here," said Dickinson.

That´s because Ontario gets its air masses from the Gulf of Mexico while B.C.´s air masses originated from the drier southwestern U.S.

In St. John´s, Rosemary Summers, who loves hot dry temperatures so much that she moved years ago, with high hopes, to a home on Summer St., said it hasn´t been a great year.

"We know out here in Newfoundland that only in August are you going to be guaranteed at least some summer weather," she said. "It would be great to be in B.C. We never get temperatures in the 30s here."

For many in B.C., the hot weather has been a little too hot.

Dry conditions forced 11,000 people from their homes temporarily two weeks ago after forest fires lit up around the Okanagan. Most of those fires have been contained but the heat toll is mounting.

The fire chief of Langley, a suburb of Vancouver, was hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest while fighting a blaze. Water restrictions in the Fraser Valley are in place after a spike in consumption when Abbotsford´s temperature soared to 36C Tuesday, breaking a 50-year-old record.

Even Victoria, which is usually temperate, is wilting with temperatures there reaching 32C, breaking the record of 29C set in 1958.

Burnaby resident Aaron Summer said the only way to stay cool is to find a spot in the community pool, where he has been bringing his 2-year-old daughter every day.

"If you can´t be in the pool, the only thing you can do is sit close to an air conditioner and hope this doesn´t last for much longer," said Aaron, who said the temperature in his daughter´s room yesterday was 32C.

Officials issued an air quality advisory after the searing temperatures, which are expected to continue until the weekend, led to high smog levels.

A thunderstorm last weekend on B.C.´s south coast has locked in moisture and a ridge of high pressure that has formed again is not allowing the humidity to move out.

Some rain would be nice, but that will come soon enough, said Chris Summer of Kaslo, B.C., in the Kootenays.

"It´s the mid-30s here and we´re gardeners so we like to have hot summers," Chris said during a break. "It´s tough for us. But the corn is knee-high and the rest of the vegetables are loving it."

Everyone is really cranky around here. We are not used to these temperatures and most of us don´t have A/C (we never need it)

Last night was too hot to sleep, and I dread the commute today.

How about we trade for 3 days and then you can have your rain back.
