Subject: How to get citizenship after landing with PR
  how does one get the citizen ship after landing in Canada. If the main applicant goes back to home country for some reason can the spouse get citizenship, by staying back in Canada. Is there any way out. This is to some extent an hypothetical question, as people get PR to stay in Canada. But i would like to get the answer in some exceptional cases this situation would arise.
The reasons why this may happen is any bodys guess.

Yes, spouse can get the citizenship if she has stayed in the country for 3 years out of 4 preceding the date of citizenship application.

If the goal is for one spouse to back to living in the home country, please do not waste your money for landing (expenses for moving and Landing fee etc)... The spouse that intends to stay here, work and eventually attain citizenship is advised to move to canada. The CIC folks don´t care if some of the eligible immigrants don´t show up in Canada.

Kelvin - the situation you posed is very common. People immigrate and return to resume work because starting over in Canada can be difficult especially to one´s pride. One partner may choose to apply for Citizenship while the other partner may choose to stay as PR for many reasons:
1. not confident in his / her English level and so, may opt to apply after age 55 where he / she will not have to sit for the Citizenship Exam;
2. One partner work overseas (homeland) and home country does not permit dual citizenship (eg. China)
3. Some minor criminal charges (ie: DUI) which bar a person from citizenship until receipt of a pardon.
There is an advantage for one spouse to have Citizenship - that the PR spouse will not lose his / her PR status if working overseas, and is accompanied by a Canadian PR / Citizen spouse. In the event that both are Canadian PR, both will have to watch their residency requirement but if one is already a Canadian Citizen, then it´s easy to negotiate residency requirement.
