Please help me if anybody has an idea about the IT job market in Canada.

Currently I am working in USA on my H1-B visa. I got my canadian PR recently and completed my landing with my family members and came back to USA and working with my project. Now my project is going to end in a week, so I am thinking to move Canada.

My question is can i get a job in my field in GTA area? I am not expecting job on the same day I land in Canada, but how long it will take to get a break in my field? I am taking some money with me to survive with my family for 3 months.

In worst case can i get some job to survive with my family (wife + kid + myself).

Please HELP ME if anybody has an idea about my problem.

thanks in advance.

Sharon, Roy I know you are not recruiters to answer my question but you might be having some idea with your huge experience in immigrant settlement cases.

It depends how successful you will be in your job search.
It really depends on you.

I understand your point Alex. But somebody told me that it is difficult to get a job in IT and some other told me that it is easy.

i am not able to guess the actual situation there.

Bssr,

Right now IT job openings is pretty low and slow in GTA. Keep an eye on workopolis.com watch how many jobs they post per day/ week.

Following are the facts I have seen so far.

1. You will be competing with hundreds of other applicants. Literally hundreds for one opening.
2. Pay will be significantly lower than what you get in US.
3. They will generally look to see if you already have Canadian experience.
4. Generally US experience seem to be treated differently - negatively.
5. If you apply for a IT job in a bank, they usually look for all the above on top of that, they will see if you that bank´s experience. With so many people working in contract there is a good possibility that someone that already worked for this bank sometime ago also applies.
6. The employers seem to look for very specific skill sets. For example software testing -- They will ask do you have experience in using SilkTest tool in testing Investment Banking. If no you are out. Even if you have Silk Test experiene in Retail Banking you are still out. They are searching with a cookie cutter.

I am not trying to impose pessimism. That is the reality right now with so many people looking for jobs employers have no problem to be picky and pay as low as possible.

Good luck.

Thanks for your detailed reply with your experiences. I understood each of your points.

Actually I am getting more money in USA as you said and leading a good life here. but the problem is with my H1-B, I am about to complete my first H1-B visa that i got for 3 years now i need to extend it for another 3 years. There is a big risk of getting extension now in this recession period as they are asking for more documentation and all.

Even if I get my extension I may not be able to file my Green Card in this 3 years and may not be able to get my GC here. So even after working for another 3 years I need to move out of this country.

So thats why I am looking for other opportunities.........

some times I feel Canada is a good choice after USA (when compared with my country India) and some times I feel insecure to move Canada.

I don´t know what to do?

Do you think market will improve in 2010 in Canada? How is the market in 2006 in Canada?

Just I am asking all these questions to get a feel of Canadian IT market.

thanks for your reply in advance.
