It means WELFARE. If you received welfare or filed for bankruptcy, you cannot sponsor.

If you pay back all money owing or pay the Government the welfare you received - only then you may have a chance of sponsoring.

No, EI is not considered financial assistance. YES, you can sponsor your wife. Even though there is no income requirement for sponsoring your spouse but you still should be ready to explain the immigration officials that what would be your source of income when your wife joins you in Canada.

Also, if your wife can work, do research in her area of field and could explain to the visa post that she will be able to work in Canada after joining you as well.

Hope this clarifies your qs.

Good luck!!

Clarification Mrs Beck... filing for bankruptcy does not disqualify someone from sponsoring their spouse. However an un-discharged bankruptcy does.

I have received GST credit. It should not affect my eligibility for sponsoring spouse or parents, right?

I have received MSP premium assistance for the past year. Does that count as welfare too? And if I repay the whole thing would I be able to sponsor?

Oh no!
I didn´t realize this. I was on income assistance for a quite a while. Is it now impossible to get my wife to stay here in the country?
